Best encryption for a chat program?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of encryption would be the best to use for plain-text conversations in an IM-like situation?
 
what about a professional grade use? If a company wanted secure capabilities on a chat client, would a home grown encryption still be OK?
 
Would there be any benefit to writing my own vs. using an existing one and simply not disclosing what is being used?
