maybe you're not losing by a dollar...if you were the high bidder and some person beats you, it's quite possible they bid much higher than you, but since all he needs is to beat you by a buck, he only pays that much.

that's true, but usually it's a last minute bid by someone who didn't bid previously that takes it.

So? What's the difference if he were to bid $20 more than your max bid 2 days ago, versus 10 seconds before the auction closed? No difference at all. End result is that he bid higher than you for that particular auction.

if you're tired of losing by a dollar, why don't you just up your max bid by 2 dollars?

Just place your maximal bid. Try not to chase the highest bidder. Before you know it, you will end up paying more than what its worth. So if you set a maximal bid, you may or may not get it. If you do, then great. If you loose the bid...then oh well...move on.

I've been looking around E-Bay for DVDs lately and it's hilarious to see people paying more than they could buy the DVD new once shipping is added on.

On the vast majority of DVD auctions at E-Bay, I can get the same DVD brand new at deepdiscountdvd.com for cheaper once bidding has ended. Sometimes MUCH cheaper.

So I have a policy. I place my max bid two to five dollars less than what deepdiscount sells them for (shipping included). If I win, fine. If not, I have the satisfaction of knowing I did not over pay like the idiot who won the auction. :)

I've used ISnipeit before too, and it works pretty well. NOt free, but 30 day full eval is, and I just reinstall, clean registry, and start over.

FYI for the ppl that just said to bid:

anyone that says sniping doesn't work doesn't understand frenzied bidding. If you bid on an auction, if your high bid is higher hten the current price, the auction price goes up, and the other person has a chance to match it....and the stakes get raised.....and so on it goes.

If you snipe it, you catch it at the last possible moment, and if your price is hihger then the auction's max price, then you do win, but you win at a minimal cost.

BTW...thx nFs4 for the link. much better then what i was using.
