What's the easiest program to use if I want to rip a CD to mp3 using LAME and --alt-preset-standard? I mean, dead, stupid easy. Easy enough that my sister could figure it out.

Use EAC with Lame 3.90.3. Once you set it up, it's simple and it also provides the best quality rips using its secure mode.

Here are two guides:

I am pretty lazy and just use WMP 9. I have heard many times that EAC is the best option but hae never tried it myself. Looks like I might have to give it a whirl

I use CDex with Lame and it seems to do a good job. Not even sure how you can tell which is better between EAC and CDex.

Its not about which is better its that EAC was produced not to mess up. With other programs (from 2003 and prior :p) you have the risk of a bad rip with a flaw in the produced file. Instead of listening to every produced file to make sure it is as good as what was on the CD (or about as good), EAC is supposed to do it without flaw.

That being said I've never had problems with other programs such as CDex or dbpoweramp - or even winamp/wmp/itunes and the like. Although I prefer to use a program that will allow me to rip it at a standard such as LAME alt-preset-standard, so that pretty much rules out the crud wmp/winamp/itunes. I've found myself using dbpoweramp for its ease of use and vast array of file type support as I'm often ripping/converting stuff to flac/musepack/ogg/LAME...

CDEX is the way to go for ease of use, but first you'll have to do a little configuring first
1)install aspi if not already done
2)from encoding options choose "alt preset" from the "quality" drop down list
3)probably you'll want to enable jitter correction from the cd/ripping tab to prevent skips

You'll only have to set that up once. Now press the button to convert cd->compressed (first check the cddb button if desired)

Thanks guys. I never knew about dbpoweramp, so I downloaded it. It's pretty cool. Just got an iAudio X5 so I've been going a little ripping crazy. Thanks again for all the replies.
