Title says it all folks. I have a Hitachi right now, 8x I think, and I wish to upgrade. It skips somewhat. So, what would be a good brand, and is the speed of the drive that important for good playback?

Thanks!

DVD movies play back at 1X irregardless of the drives capabilities. Faster drives are only useful for data DVD's, you will see no benefit in play back movies.
If your movies are skipping a faster processor or a graphics card with superior DVD acceleration, or even an add-on hardware DVD accelerator would be a better option.

Given your system, the graphics card would clearly be a better upgrade if your looking to improve DVD movie playback.

Yeah what Rand said is true. But if you want to upgrade anyways, people are very satisfied with their Lite-Ons, I've yet to see anything negative about them.

I have heard the lite on is a little noisy as many of the 16x players except toshiba´s player which is more quiet.

I have a 16x Lite-on and it is far from noisy. The fans in the pc are louder than it is

Thanks for the feedback, it's always much appreciated. In reference to one of your comments, I had heard that Lite on makes really good cd burners. Is this not the case?

Every model has to be judged seperately especially with the confusion over manufacturers and branding of different units. cdrinfo and cdfreaks are a couple of good sources for info.
