Best dvd ripping program?

I'd like to put my collection of 100 or so dvds on my computer and network with a media player (the patriot or the the seagate+). What's the best program to do this with?

I remember a long time ago, dvd dycrypter was popular but it does not look like .vob is the format of choice these days with the media players.

TIA

I find it much easier to just rip the dvds to the harddrive as a .iso file. I use dvd shrink to do this and mikinhos media mount and virtual clone drive. With these you can play the .iso in windows media center just like any other media file but the cool part is you won't spend 2 or 3 hours per dvd encoding like you would with handbrake. It takes me around 15 min. per dvd.

1. Copy the DVD using DVDFab8 to a local HD folder...
2. Use Handbrake to rip to .MKV
3. Done

Daimon

P.S. - DVD Shrink works too, and it's free, but It won't copy some newer DVDs.

is there a way to script the conversion to mkvs from handbrake ? I have a ton of iso files thast Id love to rip in batches to mkv...

I don't know about scripting, but in handbrake, you can queue things up. Handbrake will work on the queue unattended. You just have to put all the movies you want re-encoded manually in the queue.

DVDDecrypter to ISO or Video_TS
DVD Shrink to ISO or Video_TS
AnyDVD to ISO or Video_TS
DVDFab to ISO or Video_TS
MakeMKV to mkv

Most media streaming devices should read ISO, folders, or mkv. Patriot Box Office will play ISO, mkv, and folder (vob). The Seagate FreeAgent+ HD will play ISO, mkv, and folder (vob).

Rip to ISO if you want an exact copy of the movie, rip to folder (vob) if you want to strip out a bit of stuff, rip to mkv if you want to reauthor/strip out a lot of stuff.

awesome, thanks. Does the video playback "skip" when switching between vobs?

AnyDVD/AnyDVD HD is absolutely fantastic software - I highly recommend it. Luckily, I bought my license several years ago when it was much cheaper than it is now (and when it offered no cost lifetime updates). The nice thing about it is that you can use whatever tool you want to in order to rip the DVD to ISO - AnyDVD handles all the decryption and makes the DVD appear as being unencrypted to whatever tool you are using.

If you want to buy it, though, now is the time as the lifetime free update subscription option is permanently going away as of 01/01/2011.
