Best DVD->Laptop HD method?

I want to store DVDs onto a laptop for later viewing (on the raod), but maybe make the <1GB.

DIVX is a very good compression. Beside DVDshrink, what can I use to get them small and good looking? I do have Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus with DIVX support, but I think you need a AVI or MPG to start with.
