best dvd burner?

liteon is an average all around burner imho, we need something different better quality
like the ability to burn cdr using hdburn at 1.4gb is a plus

Haven't made a coaster yet with my Nec 2500A and supposedly I will be able to flash it to a 2510A (Dual Layer) when the time is right.

The best blast from the past up to now and probably in the future is owned by Plextor for Optical drives

Having HDburn limits you to only a few brands then. As far as I know, there are only 2-3 brands that support HDburning.

SPECIALIZED REPLY:

If you are burning a CD-R for audio mastering purposes (there are very few people in this boat, namely musicians) and want the absolute lowest BLER rates (assuming you are using good media - which is getting hard to find), then Plextor is king of the hill.

I am not talking about throughput or price, merely consistency and lowest amount of errors.
Cheaper Lite-on CD-R drives, which are commonly remarketed (I own three of them) good everyday machines but have a tendency to build up more errors 2/3rd's of the way into a red book audio disc. Most of the time this does not cause an audible / tracking problem on a 1st generation. It's nothing you want to replicate or send to a pressing plant though.

The Pioneer 107 drive is excellent if you are looking at the highest quality "well-rounded" drive. I give the Plextor the nod for CD-R audio mastering type purposes.

First I bought NEC 2500A. It worked great for both DVD's and CDR's. Few days ago I exchanged it for 2510A (Dual Layer) , it is almost same as 2500A, but according to NEC something inside is better aligned for dual layer burning.

i have both a TDK 420 4x DVR+R drive and a Lite-On 812S 8x DVD+-R drive. both work well, with the nod going to the newer, quicker Lite-On drive. overall, i've had 3 Lite-On drives and have enjoyed them all, so i'll stay with Lite-On unless something better/cheaper comes out.

Nu sucks, artec sucks both were defective 🙁
it cost me my time and $$$ wasted on restocking fee and shipping back to them. this bites

1st had a Pioneer A05(dad currently has it)>NEC1300A>NEC1300A(black..still have it)>Sony DRU510A retail(hated how Sony doesn't support it very well)> my sweetie 800A>800A(had it installed for less than 2 weeks..sold it right out of my rig ..🙂)>811s(ran it for a week..pulled it..)> back to the 800A 🙂

Have a Lite-On 4X myself and it worked good for a while, but now it down right sucks, it wont read discs it burned, I get errors like crazy, and Im very disappointed.

it's a damn shame Yamaha got out of the Optical business. I know Plextor is considered the top dog by most when it comes to optical. But my Yammy cd burners ALWAYS kicked ass. I would have loved to seen a Yamaha DVD+R -R drive

*siiigh* oh well

bought a Lite-On 8112s yesterday, probably gonna end up hating it, but I had enough for it, so it'll work for now. Hopefully by the time it dies on me, I'll have the money saved for a Plextor or TDK 🙂
