I'm considering getting a dvd burner, but what in everyones opinion right now is the best one? Or are there some coming out in a few months I should wait for? I figure this might be a cheap alternative to another hard drive for now since I have a lot of stuff I'd like to save, also...might be cool to convert some of my lame home movies to dvd...if thats not a terribly difficult process.

Hey,
Avid video junkie here (hey, if you get the pun then more power to you- Get a pioneer drive.. Either a03, a04, or a05 (a03/04 are basically the same drive, a05 burns at 4x I believe).. They're affordable and supported by a wide range of set top dvd players and software packages.. As far as making home movies- you'll need lots of HD space and either a DV camcorder and a firewire card or a DECENT analog capture card... I swing both ways so I like to work with Final Cut Pro and iDVD but the PC has a good amount of easy to use and affordable video editing /mastering packages (my fav- Vegas Video.. Ulead makes some great products too).. Post more info if you'd like more info :)
Take care and be well
-Sam

Don't want to start a retarded dvd-r vs. dvd+r flame war so keep in mind that these are MY experiences and may differ from others... Using very affordable RITEK DVD-r media, I've only had one 4 year old set top player screw up on me... My 4 year old sony plays Ritek dvd-r's perfectly though.. It's something odd about older Panasonics I guess. DVD-r is supposedly more compatible on older players though.. If you have a newer player than DVD-R and DVD+R should both work... I hate getting into the issue of dye types.. Let's just talk about media (dvd-r)- apple, memorex=great; ritek, imation, "sony"=good, princo=mediocre but decent for the price, hypermedia (or some b.s. like that) = stay the hell away from these...

The BEST thing about dvd-r is that the media is SO cheap right now (even after the recent price increase)

Better than the pioneer?

It can burn both + and - media. The pioneer can only do -. Is that better? Well, depends. Anyone got any thoughts? I'm planning on buying a burner as well and was wondering what I should do (I don't really want to drop 300 on a dual format burner)..

If cost is an issue I personally would go for the DVD -R/-RW drive. The media is cheaper and I don't believe there is that much difference between the standards.

Went with the Pioneer...

It should do a fine, considering it was cheaper, and so is the media.. I'll bite..

I have the Sony dru500 ULX and it works like a charm. I use Ritek dvd-r discs to burn movies and such and they've been a great tandem. Don't get too caught up in 4x though. Those discs are a little pricey compared to the 2x, like .70 more per disc which can add up to a lot of money when you buy a 100 pk spindel.

I bought the Sony DRU500 AX +-/R,RW
I Love it, Comes with Sonic My DVD, Veritas Record now, Simple Backup. DLA , and Arcsoft Showbiz
I've been using Pinnacle Studio 8 but the Sonic software rules for simplicity and it works every time.

Can burn any Format and it is quiet also, very pleased with this drive.

Check out the Optorite DD0203 for around $290. HD Burn, 8MB buffer, +/- combo, etc. Since Verbatim makes 2x double sided DVD-R, when is someone going to license Yamaha's Disc T@2 technology for DVD's? Burn your video, music or data on one side and the info, pics, title on the other???? Another good idea would be to have double sided CD-R's, with HD Burn you could put on a hour of SVCD on one side and text on the other, or the second half of a movie.
