Best DVD burner for home video???

I have a Canon Elura Mini DV recorder which I am taking home videos of.

I want to buy a DVD burner to save these videos to instead of tape so I can keep them safe as well as distribute to family.

It is important that the drive/media are compatible with most dvd players after making copies of tape to dvd.

What burner type (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, etc) do you recommend? What brand model can you suggest? I do not plan on using DVD's over again, just once. I would prefer to buy a combo drive that can burn CDR's as well so I can back up data from computer....currently so not have one.

Also, I planned on buying a basic IEEE 1394 PCI Adapter card off auction site for $20. Any recommendations here.

I have Windows Xp home.

thanks

I'd go with the Pioneer DVR-104 myself. I bought one a couple of weeks ago for $265, and I think they're below $250 now. It will burn CD's, but only at 8x speeds. Depending on what type of DVD's you want to make, you may need editing and/or authoring software. Pinnacle and Ulead seem to be the most popular. Some of the software packages include a firewire card. Good luck!

I agree with the Pioneer. I have one and I love it. It pretty much burns everything and is extremely reliable. You may want to go with the DVR-A04 which is the package bundled with some software. You will need to get an authoring program to convert your DV into a dvd format for burning. Just make sure the software is compatible with DV. Currently, if you want the most compatible with normal dvd players go with a dvd-r(w) burner.

I think I am going to go with the Pioneer A04 which seems to be selling for $300 on Ebay.

When you said "You will need to get an authoring program to convert your DV into a dvd format for burning"...what kind of saftware are you referring to? Does the software that comes with the A04 do this? Do you think my Canon DV came with software?

I have a software called "Cyberlink PowerDirector 2 PRO"...do you think this will work? http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/product_order.jsp?ProdId=45

What kind/brand DVD media do I need to burn DVD movies from DV camera to play on DVD players?

thanks
