I am trying to help out a friend with his DSL router. He has a two wire POS right now and wants to get something that actually works. I have seen a D-link all in one modem-router combination but is that the way to do it? Personally, I don't like D-link because of their Crappy India Based Tech Support but maybe it is the easiest way to solve his problem. Newegg did not seem to have much in the way of DSL modems. I don't think he needs much of a router. I think he needs to hook to one computer and one BD player. He also has VOIP phone system.

It depends on waht is wrong with the current modem.

If it is a combo Modem/Router and the Router part is the issue, check if it can be configured as a Modem only and get a good new Router.

P.S. Tech support for End-User is Bad everywhere and should be a consideration in choosing an end-User network device.

Buy a Cisco 1721 and a WIC-1ADSL. Both can be had for about $70 on ebay.

Jack it is an all in one thing and it is junk from what I am told by the owner. I think we are going to replace it with a separate modem and separate router. Probably a router we can load Tomato or DD-WRT if he has problems. So that leaves the modem.

When I had ATT DSL, I had one of those Westell modems that acts like a router too, but only has one LAN port. I just set it up in bridge mode and let my Tomatoed router handle the DSL connection and give me wireless. Never had any connection problems with that setup.

I would suggest putting the modem combo device in bridge mode and let a router handle the connection/assigning internal IPs, etc... and see how it goes from there before replacing the modem.

@Perryg114

It seems to me that the page that you link to was written by someone who have No clue about DSL Modems.

Some of the devices (like the D-Link and the Motorola Netopia 2210) are Modem Router combo.

Find somewhere a simple Modem (Westell, Motorola) and add to it DD-WRT capable Wireless Router.

The Motorola Netopia 2210 can be configured as a transparent bridge.
