Im wondering if anyone out there has had experience with more than one of the router/switch combo units, im looking to share out my dsl line, but am hoping to distribute a few of these products as well, wondering which offers best features and which offers best ease of use for the non-tech crowd? Ive heard good things about the linksys, but I know dlink makes one, smc, 3com, cisco and probably every other network hardware producer, so what does everyone prefer?
thanks in advance,
Dave

NetGear RT314, simply the best inexpensive router around with NAT.
I had a Linksys BEFSR-41. It's junk...

To each his own. I've had the Linksys since May, and never had any problems with it. The firmware updates are getting better, and the latest provides a logging feature that kicks out a log to your computer, and it logs incoming and outgoing connections. You can also forward port ranges and block them as well.

No problems here with Linky, but thats just my .02 :)

Hi Mattster
The only problem that I have with the Linksys is it's response to games.
Really that's the reason I got it anyway.
My ports were being probed from what appered to be sysops of some game servers. So I decided to just go around the whole problem.
I'm a Tribes player and the Linksys will NOT work with it. You get on a server and it drops you several minutes in to the game. I belong to a highly ranked team and I also played for US East in the World Finals. It simply wasn't very good.
The RT314 works great though.
And yes I tried prot forwarding and the DMZ, the Linksys just has a problem with the Tribes net scheme.

Thats cool. I don't play too many games these days. Nothing seems to hold my interest level for very long. Over at Practically Networked, Tim has put together a pretty comprehensive listing of known ports for a wide range of applications that need to be forwarded on Linky.

Glad your Netgear is working out better. :)
