Best DSL Ethernet Modem?

Fun Guy

I may have to replace a friend's USB DSL modem with an Ethernet DSL modem. Does anyone have any experience with DSL modems and can offer any advice regarding quality and price?

First thing you'll need to know is what type of circuit he's running (most likely DMT, but you need to know for sure), and you'll also need to know what protocol the ISP uses. (Bridging, PPP, PPPoE, etc.).

Then you can look at your options.

What type of modem is being replaced? What DSL provider?

They're with SBC (Pacbell.net, actually) in San Diego.

They've been having a few problems dropping offline, and after talking with the Pacbell guy on the phone, this is what leads me to believe it is the modem.

Problem is, they're in San Diego and I'm in New York, so I really can't find anything out until I get there at the end of the week. I was just trying to get a head's up so when I walked into Fry's I would have somewhat of a clue.

I'm pretty sure PacBell is all DMT, Qwest was pretty much the odd man in using CAP technology.

Personally I really like the Cisco 678, they're quite capable little routers with an awesome IOS derived command line interface.

Can't say for sure if it would work, but if it would that's what I would pick.
