Best Download Manager - Freeware?

I am looking for a Freeware Download Manager and unsure which to select. What has your experience been with them if you use a dial-up connection to the Internet? How well do they perform in increasing the download speed as well an scheduling/resuming?

I use Download Accelerator.. I've tried all others and didn't like them.. DAP doesn't have all the features but its pretty good.. BTW I'm on DSL

I second Download Accelerator Plus. tweakfiles.com It saves as it downloads even if you lock up your system and have to reboot. Which always helps when d\ling big files 8-D

I have read that both Download Accelerator and ReGet contain spyware and for that reason I would like to consider some alternatives. Other suggestions?

Could you list the problems you have had for the benefit of other who have not used this specific download manager?

Opera 5, the freeware version, has a nice basic downloader with "Resume", which I use regularly. It doesn't seem to have any scheduling feature. It is not spyware, and it's a fine alternative browser.

Do like I did, use download accelerator, but turn off all the automatic crap. That way, if you want to use it, just right click on the file and it will let you "use DAP"

To Homer: Where is Opera 5 available and to what extent (%) will it accelerate my downloads?

To Syzygy: Is there a specific name or two you can mention regarding dl expert?

To Agamar: How does one turn-off the automatic c...?

Opera is not particularly a download "accelerator", but does seem to D/L faster than IE, and will allow you to mess with things like # of connections. What it does do that I find helpful is allow me to resume downloads that are cut off, or that I have to terminate part way through - providing that the host server allows that - which is all any of these programs can do in this regard.

Opera 5, Gozilla, Getright, DAP, Re-get all have some form of Adware/Spyware. Most are ok programs but i prefer my privacy.
If anyone knows a Download program that has no Adware then please post a link.

the best program out there is probably getright. it's not free though..but for ppl with no morals, there are keygens out there 😉

but it's a great program, support the programmers if you can.

EmperNero: Excuse my ignorance but what are keygens? And, if you were to choose a freeware program what would your recommendation(s) be?

Keygens are small programs to obtain the serial# to a program so as to register it, You can find cracks/serials/keygens for most shareware/demo/trial programs.

There are many disscussions on the issues of using cracked/pirated programs.

Programs like gozilla are free but you have to put ip with the adware (spyware) that comes with it. Regestering (buying) such programs is supposed to get rid of the adware.

Getright is NOT free and still has Adware - avoid this.

Older versions of Octopus HAD adware - the newest version has NO adware.
The person who told you that it has should perhaps research a little and not just post what some outdated site says.
The best program for scanning your comp for Adware/Spyware is Ad-Aware found here www.lavasoft.de (Free Ofcourse, No Ads 🙂

Man, before I reformatted this summer I had a really old version of GetRight that had no adds at all. I wish I would've kept the install file. 🙂

sukhoi,
I have version 3.32 archived, i don't know if that one has the adware or not. Let me know and i can send it to you

Thanks for the offer, but I don't DL much since I'm on dial-up, so it really wouldn't be worth it for me to get another version of GetRight.

To SonOfZeuz: Would you send me a copy if indeed it does not have any adware? Also regarding Octopus is there an optimum ratio one can/should use with respect to the number of threads that a file can be broken into for downloading? What would you say are the limits? Is there any adverse effects (corruption of data) regarding the type of file it is (program file, data, music/video ...)? Tell me of yours and others experiences, if you please.

P.S.: I corrected the problem noted in the private message.
