OK, I wanna start DJing, just for fun and only play hip hop music. Friend of mine told me that only the Technics MK2 are the "real" ones, everything else sux. What do you guys and gals think?

Thanks

That's what I've heard as well. $400 each though. Actually I read of a few others in a mag but they were over $500

You could ask paulson..but paulson asked me how to start so you might as well go to the source ;)

Well, what kind of DJing are you going to get into? Clubs? Or high school dances/birthday parties? If the former, no doubt, get the Technics. No turntable compares, don't bother getting one. The latter? Don't bother with turntables man. Sure, you will be labeled 'not a real dj', but so what? Turntables are expensive, and the music is too. If you get a nice dual cd player (~400-500), you can use your current music, and have a LOT more music at your disposal, for cheaper. And you can still beatmix, which is all people at a simple party or dance will want. They don't like scratching.

As for amps, I used a QSC RMX amp. It kicked ass. A step up would be either the next model up QSC, or the Crown CE1000, or CE2000 if you really want something sweet.

Speakers? I'm a JBL fan for pro audio. TR125's are a nice starting set.

And the more lights, the better.

Mixers, I had a Gemini BPM, because of the built-in bpm counter. But I found I never used it and beatmixed by ear, so you'd be better off getting a nice 3 or 4 channel numark or statton for the same price without it.

check out Pro Sound and Lighting. They are sweet.

you're wasting your money if you buy anything other than technics

go on ebay, you can probably get a good beginner setup for ~1k (2 tables, mixer, needles, blah blah blah)

just remember, vinyl will set you back like 10/piece

but if you decide to spin, vinyl is the way to go =P

If you buy anything else besides vestax or technics, youll have a harder time learning. My bro learned on some old home audio turntables, one was a belt drive technics, the other a sony direct drive...so it is possible to learn but better to start off with good equipment. If you dont got the cash then settle with gear from Stanton. As for speakers/amps, what are you gonna be doing, i can tell you ur not gonna end up ina club ur first year..heh..but for doing house parties and little events lugging and amp and speakers sucks, i suggest you get a nice pair of preamped jbls or mackies. Check out some of the equipment me and my bro use here: http://bwsvi.com/DJ.htm

another vote for the Technics ML1200s. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

Might as well get the Vestax O5Pro mixer as well :)

SL1200s rite?

Oh yeah and the mixer, dont buy anything too cheap....for starters the gemini UMX series is fine and their cheap rite now, our other mixer broke and my bro picked a umx 9 up for 99 bux...sturdy mixer, good quality, kinda unusual for gemini. They weere made as a top of the line series but never caught on, their on clearance everywhere now.

sl 1200s mk ii for turntables or the newer 1200s if you got the money. For the mixer I would recommend an vestax 06a, its cheap and slim. For needles get the schure m447s. Remember, equipment will end up being like 1/10 of your cost if you really get into it. My equipment is worth about a thousand (not counting speakers, amp and other stuff) and ive spent well over 10 thousand on records. Forget buying those powerful speakers and amps, just use your computer.

some of those dj-in-a-box type kits are decent.

i started with a package that included 2 gemini xl500II direct drive tables, cheesy cartridges, and a crappy gemini mixer.

i slowly upgraded to some really nice carts and a nice numark mixer as i used the stuff more.

there's really no reason to go straight to 1200's....any decent direct drive will give you a good feel to start off. (and you can get 2 turntables for the price of ONE 1200!)

trust me, i've been through this same dilemna, you really wanna make sure mixing is for you before you drop all that cash

edit: oooh....found a pic

Well I love music, always have, since I was a child. And I'm really into hip hop and RnB. I only was at the turntable once, and already wanted to do it as perfect as possible, I could have made it a couple more hours if my friends didn't want to go :) I'm not saying it was good(it was horrible to say the least) but the urge for doin' it perfect is here.

if you're sure then start cruising ebay for used 1200's....or look at some more expensive stuff like higher torque gemini's or numark
