basically right now i've got divx pro 5.02 and xvid installed

i remember when i first got my comp and watched some divx movies the quality was super super good. now it's just not as good anymore...i think i might have had some other codecs installed but i dont know.

so what are the best divx settings and what are the files/codecs needed to obtain highest quality??

and what's the best thing to install for AC3 sound too? i've gotten really confused about all this, so thanks for the help

Same videos have lower quality now?
Maybe better ones where encoded with 2-pass.

For AC3 I'm using ACFilter, it's still young but Open Source and very customizable.

You are hereby ordered to visit the following two sites.

Doom9
DivX Digest

At those locations, you will learn way more than you ever cared to know about video encoding with DivX. :)

Oh yes - I used DivX 4.12 two-pass previously, but I'm using XVid a lot now. It seems to give excellent quality for the size.

Mind you, you just can't mess with uncompressed YUV for the hardcore editor. "MPEG2? That uses compression - it sucks. Compression is the final step, not the first." :D

That last bit still applies though - make sure you keep at least double the data rate around until your final compression.
