hey I just got an old laptop for free.. It is a Pentium 100 mhz with only 16 megs of ram and a 1 gig hard drive.. I want to know the best distro of linux to throw on it just so i can brush up on all my linux commands and stuff. I dont care about a GUI, I just want to learn and maybe set up some network connections.

It loaded knoppix STD without the GUI but took a while... So what should I install? I just remembered that I have DSL so maybe Ill try that.. otherwise, what would be best?

Any distro should be fine as long as you don't install X and you can choose what packages to install. DSL would probably be a good place to start since it's a very minimal install and since it's based on Debian you can easily install whatever else you need after the installation.

Yep. Damn small Linux is a good one to check out. It will be mostly usefull for command-line stuff though.

Also considure FreeDOS. http://www.freedos.org/ It's not Linux, but it's still something fun to play around with. Much better then old MS-DOS, but still mostly compatable. Plus it will be blazing fast on that hardware.

They even have a GUI environment for it called OpenGEM. http://gem.shaneland.co.uk/
