Best Direct Cable Connection Method?

Hello,

I need to connect a Laptop with a Desktop and transfer some files. I have used a null modem cable once, to connect the 2 computers through the serial port. I transfered some files, but it was slow. I need something faster to transfer 600+MB files. What other cables can get faster file transfers? I don't want to network them, because I don't want spend a lot of money just to transfer files. Is LPT faster than serial? Or what about USB? Can I use USB?

Thanks

USB Direct connect Module (this is a USB cable that has a special Network module installed on it). Connect the two computers through the USB, install the Drivers and your are Connected. This type of connection support only 8Mb/sec.

Belkin.com sells this type of Gizmo

I would bite the bullit and purchase two cheap NIC cards and a crossover cable. I have seen PCMCIA 10/100 ethernet cards for as low as $15-20 (I know for a fact that compusa has them for $20, pricewatch.com has them for $9) and PCI ehternet cards can be be had for $5-10. Not sure about a cross over cable. but, all in all, I would think you could do it for under $50, and it would be woth the investment. And it would be 10 times faster than the usb method, and who knows..maybe 50-100 times faster than a parallel or serial DCC.
