Take a look at dpreview, Digital Camera Resource, and PC Photo Review. They have some good camera reviews. Whatever you get, make sure the image sensor is not CMOS-based, because they have trouble with light range and are generally cheaper (though for a web cam it's fine), and make sure you know if it's optical or digital zoom. Stay away from Sony, they're far overpriced versus their competition. I'm personally waiting until 3 Megapixel cameras drop to the $300 range. Good luck!

I've had good experiences with Olympus. As with any new foray into technology the most important question is what do you want it to do?

2MP cameras are pretty adequate for most personal use since this equates to a well saturated image of about 4 X 6, quite equal to 35mm film. 3MP is really for pro users and most of those cameras have lots of bells a whistles - all well and good if you are a serious hobbyist, bracket all your shots, want to take pics in strange lighting conditions etc. If you regularly blow your images up to 8X10 and carry a bag full of camera stuff - this is for you.

My next digicam is going to be an Oly c700z - it has a 10X optical zoom (equiv. to a 38 - 400mm zoom in 35mm) but is still a 'pocket' camera. There is an image stabilized version of this too (Oly2100) that is even better, but won't fit in your pocket anymore. These are in the 400+ range though - there are lots of good pocket shooters for around 300.

As a technology digital photography has matured to the point where it is truly useful and affordable - you don't need film any more. Digicams are just like computers in that if you wait the price will always come down - but then you won't be taking any pictures in the meantime..

Well I can tell you that I have an Olympus 2100 ultra zoom and I LOVE it!! I got it in the summer for around $500, not sure how much it is now. When it first came out it retailed for $999. It's a 2MP camera that has a 10X optical zoom. The zoom is the best part of the camera, it allows you to take some amazing shots that look very profesional. Like closeups of football games etc. The camera is a little bulky but it doesn't bother me at all. I know this might be out of your price range but just something to consider. Hope that helps.

I spent a ton of time and research and bought a Konica KD-200Z 2.1 megapixel with optical and digital zoom
for $200 with rebates from costco.com.

I can say the image quality and the quality of the camera is amazing and the price blows away the competition.
