So my mom is an early shopper and knew I had been wanting a new digital camera for Christmas.

She told me to find one I wanted for about $200-250 price range... could probably go a tad bit higher if it is justified.

Figured since most of you guys take some sweet pictures I'd ask here and get some valued opinions as opposed to trusting half-assed reviews from people that probably don't know what they are talking about on various websites.

The only real wants I'm looking for are:

-Adjustable resolution
-No dumb "base stations"; A media card or hooking directly to USB works best
-Any media card is fine
-I have both USB2.0 and firewire, so that is not a concern
-Brand does not matter, quality does
-Multi-year warranty is , but some warranty is all that is required. It would suck to need a new camera for Christmas next year ;)

Thanks bunches.

why is the base station "dumb?" too many things on your desk already?

www.dpreview.com
www.steves-digicam.com

two reputable sites. And for that price range, canon A series.. whichever happens to fall in that price range depending on what deals ross throws out :p Don't forget memory and batteries, maybe a case, into the cost.

and search, many a threads on this

unfortunately, yes. That, and coupled with the fact that I'd like to be able to upload from pretty much everywhere. Simply taking a small USB cable with me would be loads better than dragging a bulky base station around everywhere.

Thanks for the links, sorry for not searching.

ah yes, that is true, some cameras are base station ONLY... that, yes is a little small minded.

Nowadays, you can get a good 4 MP camera for around $250. I'd recommend the Canon PowerShot A85, which can be found for $217 plus shipping at BuyDig.com.

Wow......at least I didn't have to post my holy trifecta of digital camera sites for this one....other people beat me to it. Sweet.

I usually just respond with steve's, dp review, and imaging resource.

Another vote for the Canon PowerShot SD110 for $199 with free shipping.

Pay for it with a premium credit card (Visa, MC or Amex) and receive an extra 1 year extended warranty for FREE!

woot? i didn't know that... :( oh well, Canon will never break!!! :)

Though they are a very good digicam maker, they've had their problems. Case in point, the E18 error on A60 & 70. The newer models dont have that, so Its all good.

hey, I was trying to register the product, and they want my Serial number, is it the "upper" number located on the bar code / UPC?

Sorry I never registered. Is that mandatory to get the warrantee? Cause I never register any products.

I know, same here, I never register anything, but somehow this thing seems so precious to me that I just want to actually go ahead and register it.... :)

we found that the Canon A40 was bad at indoor/low-light pictures so we have reservations about another powershot model.

We don't mind another 2-3MP camera so long as the pics are clearer/brighter. Tell me it's just that camera w/ the problem...
