Best Digital Camera for around ~$1000

my boss asked me to research a good camera for around $1000. something that takes clear/sharp pictures for product photography. and graphics work. any recommendations?
 
Are you getting an expensive camera for low end work (web, in house brochures) or a cheap camera for pre press/high res pro grade stuff ?
 
well.. i'm gonna use it to take product pictures for the graphics guys.. who design the boxes and manuals which go to the print guys. so i need a camera that takes high res images for graphics work, yet also produces high enough quality for printing. is that possible for around $1000? btw. i work at I/OMagic.. yeah yeah i know.. but we'll be using the camera to do package design work.
