I know Cannon is a good bet, but I want to double check. I've gone through review sites like dpreview.com but I want to hear some personal opinions.

$300 post tax and shipping (if applicable), what's the best camera I can get?

Only things that are important are an Optical zoom of at least 3x, the time to take the picture can't be more than a second and 3 mega pixels

god damnit, there are way too many model names and it's too confusing

what is supposed to be the best cannon camera for a $300 MAX budget? sd300, a95, g6, s70, s2 IS...........?

Have you narrowed down your choices to at least 3-4 cameras? Why not bump it up to $400 and get the Canon G6? :)

i bought a Canon S1 IS a few weeks ago, i like it. 3.2mp is enough for me, but the extra MP is definitely a plus (the Image Stabilizer is great when you use the 10x zoom). if you dont need ultra zoom get an A95, i think its around $220 after tax + shipping

I got the Canon SD200 (3.2 megapixel) for $200 from BestBuy a few months ago... extremely happy with the camera so far, very small and long battery life

Bought my Canon Powershot S45 back in early 2004 for about $300, and I've been more than happy with it. Obviously its an older model, but Canon should be a good pick regardless.

dont forget to factor in the price of a new memory card. the ones included with digital cameras are generally not enough. you want to get at least a 256mb card. those should run you about $25.

also you may need an extra battery for those extended photo shoots. those should run you about $20, depending on what model camera you have.

I just bought a VuPoint DC-5320AZ (5.1 MP) and a 512MB PNY SD Card from NewEgg and the total was $208, shipping and tax included. It's a pretty sweet camera. If you just need the camera, it's like $155 plus s&h and tax.

Got mine for ~$260 after rebate. It has better resolution than all 7MP and most 8MP digicams, great ISO800 images (and good 4x6 ISO1600 prints), 2.5" LCD, not too big or small, good flash range, etc.

Try to shoot a natural light photo at ISO400 with a Canon/Nikon/Whatever digicam and you'll be quite disappointed.

You can probably get the Canon SD400 for a little under $300. Dell often has 15-20% coupons with extra $$ off coupons.
