Best digital camera for $300-600?

Hey guys. Yeah I'll probably get flamed for not searching, but I did skim the search results to make sure there was nothing exactly like this thread. Either way, you have to admit nothing beats fresh and immediate responses like a new thread.

Anyways, I've wanted a new digital camera for a while. I'm looking to spend between $300 and $600. Video is a must, beyond that I'm not really sure. I want to do some serious research on SLR's, but I haven't gotten the time. In a nut shell, don't they just take nice action shots? I'm not sure if I'd be satisifed with a couple hundred dollar Powershot and some spare cash to boot, or if I should go the distance and throw down a fare chunk of change.

I'm going to spend a while playing with different ones at the store before I decide, but off hand this looks like a decent starting point: Nikon 6.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

Any other suggestions?

if you buy an SLR you'll need to budget money for glass. suffice to say, you're not getting much of an outfit for $600. you should probably go with a compact camera.

The lens in point-and-shoot cameras is small, and becomes the limiting factor at around 5-6MP. Anything beyond that is a useless waste of money. Good glass, is good glass, and that's where SLRs rule. Generally, a 4MP SLR will take FAR better pictures than a 7MP P&S. However, unless you're prepared to dump $900-1k into the body, $400+ into the lens, and lug the thing around is a giant case, P&S rule as far as casual picture-taking is concerned, and there is no better value than the Powershot SD450.

If you get an SLR, you WILL NOT get video, period. SLRs are pics only.

if you're looking for a prosumer point-and-shoot, I would recommend the Canon S2 IS or the S3 IS. The S3 has one more megapixel (6 as opposed to 5), a little better image quality, and much better video. However, the S3 is also more expensive, as stores are phasing out the S2 and it is available on sales for less than $300. It's still a great camera, as well.

I disagree. A DSLR will give the OP to "upgrade" later buy buying more/better lenses. A point and shoot will limit him to what he bought.

But the OP should know that a DSLR will not make him a good photographer. 😉

Edit: just saw that video is a must. Maybe the OP is better off getting a P&S for now. Or maybe $300 on a P&S and $300 on a video camera, because digital still cameras are not great for video. Portability is also an issue.
