Best dialup modem for linux?

I know a hardware serial modem is the best, but I don't think they have any in my area. I don't have a credit card, so Internet is out of the question. I was wondering if there are any decent hardware pci modems that would work well. I was specificly wondering about this modem.

Here it is.

It is about the only one in the area that might work. Do you think it will?

Well after doing a little research it seems it is a software modem. I guess I will try to find a serial modem. Thanks for looking.

I've heard that US Robotics internal modems work fairly well.

I personally have an Intel 536EP, and I've used it under Ubuntu before. I had to manually compile the driver for it, but that's no big deal. I bought this modem from a local "mom & pop" shop, but it's fairly popular.

Thanks Drew. I am going to look into getting a serial modem so I don't have to worry about downloading kernel source and compiling.

Christ.... I'd love nothing more than to permanently mute all gentoo aficionados and their eternal compiling... even though one of my best friends is one of them.

Not everyone needs to do that crap... I'm of the opinion it's a waste of time. 😛

As for you, Willoughbyva, why don't you just ask someone to mail you the CDs you need, rather than downloading so much stuff? I'm sure that Tim would help you. If you want Ubuntu, I could handle that one. 😉

You always download precompile apps, but you have the option to change compile flags around to suit your needs.

Damn choices... 😉

Edit: Also like GeekDrew said, Ubuntu will send you the cd, shipping and all, free of charge.

Thanks guys. I ended up going by Staples and picked up a zoom external serial modem. It works really well with windows and Linux.

Thanks
