So I wanted to know what are the best "Overall Performance" desktop SSD for 2015!

I was going to go with the desktop version of Samsung 850 Pro 512GB or an Intel 1500/2500 Pro Series or 730 Series 480GB.

But this based on previous experience and have not purchase a SSD since the Samsung 840 Pro.

First, there there still two versions: one for notebooks and one for desktop SSD or are they now are combined into one SSD.

Is there a different between 256GB and 512GB in performance statistic or have are they now pretty close to one another based on size?

Going to wait till other 3D NAND Drives are release! So just ignore this post for now!

If you want highest synthetic results, 850 PRO is the king, if you wanted best real world performance, SanDisk Extreme PRO

I upgraded my two 1TB 850 PROs to two 960GB SanDisk Extreme PROs....

just to give you an example of my real world experience.....

after formatting and installing Windows 8.1 + all updates + clean up all temp files........it takes 57 seconds using my 850 PRO 1TB to make an image of C: onto the second 850 PRO on D: as a backup

using the SanDisk Extreme PRO, that same job takes 42 seconds

So here are the benchmarks, a bit slower (in benchmarks) than my 850 PRO 1TB but faster scores than all the reviews I've seen online probably due to my faster laptop....

Samsung 850 PRO 1TB:

AS SSD Benchmark with IRST 13.6.0.1002 (W8)

CrystalDiskMark with IRST 13.6.0.1002 (W8)

SanDisk Extreme PRO 960GB:

AS SSD Benchmark with IRST 13.6.0.1002 (W8)

CrystalDiskMark with IRST 13.6.0.1002 (W8)

But what matters at the end of the day, is performance consistency and real world performance as I have experienced myself right from the start even before installing the IRST drivers the backup/imagine process was about 20% faster on the SanDisk Extreme PRO.

Understand, outside of benchmarks, you won't see a whole lot of difference between the higher-end consumer-level drives, even like the 850Pro and the Intel 730, or, for that matter, even lower-end SSDs.

Some 7mm SSDs come with a 2mm spacer for applications that need them, the Intel 530's I got did, for example.

I think the 256/512GB performance differences are largely a thing of the past, but I would think you would pick the SSD capacity based on your needs.

What are you going to be doing with this SSD? For most desktop workloads the difference in performance between, say, the 850 Pro or Extreme Pro, and the more reasonably priced 850 Evo, Ultra II, MX100/BX100, etc. will be irrelevant.

Samsung is great until you have to rma a drive and then you will discover what many of us have already experienced with them and their lack of support. They are the reason that I'm running an intel ssd right now.

Hi friends. Actually I have Plextor M6s 256GB in my PC. I want to change it for ~500GB. I cant choose from Samsung 850 Pro and Sandisk Extreme Pro. I usually copy small/medium/large files, play the games and network surfering. What can u say what buy? In real life what will be better today after FW upgrades?

That Plextor is a pretty decent drive in and of itself...

Given those two choices, I'd probably take the Sandisk. My 840Pro failed in less than a year, and it seems like Samsung is having some performance and FW problems with some of their newer drives (not necessarily the 850Pro, mind you...) so the 850Pro would probably be at the bottom of the list, for me, anyway.
