Best Deals on PS3

I'm thinking of getting a PS3. I am a light console gamer, so mainly I would be using a PS3 if I got one was a Blue Ray player. I have noticed that the lower end of regular Blue Ray players are about the same as the basic PS3 (~$400).

I've read about deals where you get a Sony CC or something like that which give a one time first buy savings on a Sony product which people have used to get a good deal. Can any one update on this and what options there are to get a good deal on a PS3? Also can any one comment about possible price drops with the coming holiday season this fall?

Edit:

After searching the old topics, a post over a month ago mentioned the Sony Visa CC where you get $100 credit with a purchase of $299 or more. That appears to be in effect still and would theoretically bring a basic PS3 down to $299. Any one do this and have any comments or caviats to point out?

You should probably also be asking yourself whether profile 2.0 players will go lower than the PS3 by the end of the year. I don't think this is out of the question at all.

Sony has publicly said that they don't want to do or anticipate doing any price drops. However, this is not the same as them saying they _won't ever do it_. It's almost impossible to predict whether any stores will do promotions, although I would suspect a game bundle during the holiday season would be likely.

Speaking as an HT enthusiast and a gamer, I can say that I'd probably prefer the BDP-S550 for pure BR-D playback duties (integrated IR receiver, HDMI-CEC, bitstream options, simpler GUI, etc.), but that the PS3 has a lot to offer if you think you'll use its features (gaming, browsing, media streaming, Linux, etc.).

Then the question is, would they drop below $300 by Christmas. If not and I could snag a basic PS3 using the Sony CC deal, then I could theoretically get a Blue Ray player and gaming console for $300. That might be the way to go for the next 6-8 months since Blue Ray players probably won't drop into the $2xx price category within that time I'd guess.

Something to consider. I just dropped about $1800 on a new Sammy 46-inch LCD HDTV so I'm looking to save a little denero!

You'd be surprised at how quickly they'll drop. The Sony CC deal also might not last forever.

If you can live with upscaled DVDs, that might be the way to go. Or you could get a TiVo HD, and make good use of it for free HD movies.

Sony just released their first 2.0 profile Blu-Ray player recently at $400. Same price as the PS3. For now, the PS3 is still the better overall value.

Don't expect a price drop on the PS3 though. Sony execs have stated that they are looking to make a profit over dropping prices. Which is why we're only going to see the stripped down 40GB PS3 get a HDD swap to 80GB after the 80GB MGS4 bundle runs out.

what was the point of releasing the mgs 80gb system and going back to the 40gb with a hdd swap?

as for the sonystyle deal. I was going to do it but at the time walmart offered $100 GC and no need to get a CC which takes 6-8 weeks to process your rebate.

I can go ahead and apply for the CC regardless of my decision I suppose, and I don't see any reason I couldn't apply it to a standard Sony Blue Ray player either but if they are the same cost as a PS3, it seems like a no brainer to the PS3.

I read the posts about Sony exec's statements. That may be true, but it is also "Corporate Speak" as they want to project a certain policy publically while they may or may not be considering a price drop behind closed doors. That being the case, we the customer can only make decisions by our wallets and our assessments of present and near future market expectations. I would guess it will be October before Blue Ray prices start to show significant reductions in sync with the holiday buying market. If they don't drop much more than $100, the Sony CC deal looks pretty good. And the $80 or so I could spend on an upconvert DVD might as will go to defray almost a 3rd of the cost of a Blue Ray player, assuming they are backward compatable and can up convert DVD's. (Can Blue Ray players upconvert DVD's as well as play HD Blue Ray's?)

Whats the deal with that? Explain.

Oh, and why is Sony removing BC for the PS2 on the newer PS3's? I do own a PS2 so I can survive without BC, but just like the Wii is BC with the GC, its nice to have less consoles cluttering up the TV stand.

Go back in time to the beginning of June and buy a PS3 at Walmart; comes with a free $100 gift card.

Your guess is as good as anyone's. I'd say it's to save money, but the version with BC sold for $499, and there will be no $499 PS3 anymore (unless they announce something else). The $499 version was probably more profitable as well. I'd say it's to reduce confusion from having multiple models, but they just added to the confusion by putting an 80 GB drive in a PS3 with no BC when an 80 GB PS3 already exists with BC. Perhaps the 80 GB wasn't selling as well as the 40 GB? Stores care a lot about profit per shelf inch, and the PS3 has a big box.

Expect the 40GB's to go on clearance eventually...

If you can still find them, that is. Anecdotal reports claim that the shipments are drying up.

I checked a couple of local stores at the mall on Sunday (BB and CC) and I could only find a PS3 on the shelf in one. It was the bundled $499 80GB version.

But I don't think I'm willing to pay an extra $100 for BC at this point - and keep my expenses a little lower.

The current $399 40 GB has the no-rumble sixaxis controller instead of the dual shock The new 80 GB model will be $399 with dual shock but no game and no PS2 BC (just PS1).

A PS2 Slim with a pair of memory cards (not needed for PS3) is ~$160, but it should play 100% of PS2 games (duh 🙂 ) instead of 80-90%.

Right now the extra $100 for the 80GB MGS bundle gets you PS2 BC, the Metal Gear game, and dual shock instead of sixaxis. A pretty good deal if you want those features.

If you need a new TV. BB is always running a 100 dollar off deal for the PS3. Sometimes they even toss one in on sets over 1K. That is how I got my PS3.

I bought the PS2 slim about a year ago.

If the $399 80 GB model comes with the dual shock, then I don't really need the old 80 GB model for the extra $100 since I'm not interested in the game it comes with or BC. It is too bad they are removing the BC - that is stupid. Having the Wii BC with the GC is handy as we put away the old GC and my daughter still plays GC games on the Wii as well as the Wii games.

I just ordered a Samsung 46-inch HDTV on Amazon last Friday so it looks like the BB $100 off deal won't work for me. But maybe someone else! 🙂

It is my own opinion that the PS3 playing your PS2 games will look much, much better than anything your PS2 will output. Not to mention all the side benefits of the PS2 emulation on the PS3.

That may be true. The PS2 hasn't gotten a great deal of use so far, which is why I'm not placing a great deal of importance on BC for a PS3 I'd be getting for a Blu Ray player.

I did see that 80 GB MGS4 bundle locally so I might have access to the that version of PS3. But I am not ready to lay down $500 on low priority stuff. Well, $400 if I apply for the Sony CC and it is still availble.

I guess they say 6-8 weeks to cover themselves, but my account was credited the $100 when I got the first bill. I also got the Walmart GC, a make a great deal on the 80GB bundle.

techwanabe, I agree that the current 80GB bundle offers the best value. Even if you don't play MGS4, you should have no problem selling the game. Heck, if you can find the bundle, you could ebay it, make a profit, then get the new 80Gb when it comes out. The current 80GB bundle is still pretty hard to get, and I'm kicking myself for not getting one when I saw it last week.
