Best deal on laptops that my school is offering?

Dell Latitude D810

Good processor, good video card, decent price.

Assuming those are your only options, anyway. There are much better deals in the retail world.

to Skiguy:

I assume you will be lugging that laptop all around campus. If so, avoid that Dell D810. It weighs almost 7 pounds.

Get one of the lighter Thinkpad T-series or the Dell D610s. Your back and arms will thank you.

The 4EU in particular is a great deal. Retail it costs $2100.

HTH.

Is a coupe of pounds reall that big a deal? Is it even worth mentioning? His name is skiGUY, after all.

In a college environment? You bet.

When you got a rucksack full of paper notebooks, binders of handouts from the instructors, plus a couple other paper textbooks, the last thing you need is a 7-pound laptop plus power brick and other things in another slingbag.

Take it from someone who has been there, done that and gotten the T-shirt. You want a LIGHT laptop if you intend to lug it around the campus.

And if you live off-campus or take public transportation, you need something even lighter-- a sub-4-pound ultraportable like a Thinkpad X-series or Dell 700m.

I concur. Even the Thinkpad T40 was a bit much after a full day trudging around campus. If you are going to travel a lot, IBM X-series plz. Every pound counts.

My 7.5 lb laptop is a bit much for me lugging it from the car to the train and train to class. If you can go under 6 lbs with 3+ hours of battery do it.

Seeing as how I am a Senior in EE/CPE at NCSU 😉 I have to recommend one of the Thinkpads. I got my T42 through the bookstore last year and haven't looked back. If you true portability, go with the 14" model. If you will be using this as a primary PC a lot, I would recommend the 15". Also, definitely get the 3 year Thinkpad protection. Accidental damage coverage rules!! Lastly, GET THE 9-CELL!!!!! The 6-cell is a worthless battery IMO, giving you 3-3.5 hours max. The 9-cell should let you hit or go beyond 5 hours, with little added bulk/weight.
Enjoy NCSU!

Get the first 810, the sub 2k one. It's the best deal of the bunch and it's really not that heavy, I've setup a few for customers.

Alright, thanks guys. I needed something light and durable, so I'll probably go with the 4EU.

Nice to see a fellow wolfpacker on the boards 🙂
