This is a better deal than the $299 Dell Outlet. Hmmm!

Against that other deal, it's cheaper, but is used, with a slower processor and vid chip, slower memory, and a smaller, also used monitor, so . . . if it does what you need and doesn't go south sooner, then, yeah, a decent deal.

I recommended a Chromebook on someone else's budget computer deal, but they religiously wanted a desktop box. The Chromebook is so simple and easy to use for my standards, so I'd recommend it here too

The PC is being used for desktop stuff.
The person already owns a laptop, but I heard using a laptop for desktop ergonomics is tricky. Laptop enters power saver mode, etc.

If the person already owns a good laptop, is a desktop truly necessary for tabletop computing? I suggested just getting a keyboard, mouse, and maybe even monitor, for the PC desk, but a tech friend told me this is a bad idea.
 
it's a fine idea. As far as power saver mode goes you can set a laptop to pretend it's a desktop when it's plugged in.

It's the whole point of docking stations.
 
So, what do I need to buy and set to use a laptop as a desktop station.
Monitor, keyboard, mouse. What OS settings do I need to do?

All you need to do is plug them in. You may have to press a function key on the laptop to switch the display over the the external monitor.

Why did he tell you it's a bad idea? Because of the power saver mode thing?
I have a laptop setup at home that acts like a desktop, because I have all the peripherals in one place and I sit in a desk chair. Of course, I prefer using the desktop, but I'm just saying it works fine.
 
Don't want an Android OS.
There are Windows apps that might still need to be run.
Although those days are seriously running thin.

Strictly speaking, the Chrome OS is not the Android OS, but I take your point. 🙂

$329 LG Chrome AIO with keyboard & 21" Screen. Looks like a tablet with a mount except no touchscreen.

How come the Chrome OS has a programmer shell? Must be based on some kind of Linux.

I was looking at the LG Chrome going on sale on the 25th and it has about the specs of a 21" flatscreen up to 1080p full HD and a tablet. But the screen is mounted securely to the base and it has a USB keyboard. It did have some kind of programmer's shell. It mentions this in the manual. Might be nice to see a real review. I was trying to determine if it can be used to watch Flash video.

Just be aware that that CPU is a 22nm Atom, and as such, it has very poor single-threaded performance compared to Core CPUs, even Core2Duo.
