what's the best overclocking ddr ram... company and size? ecc or nonecc

like... samsung 512 meg pc2700 or corsair 512 meg pc2700 or mushkin 512 meg pc2700 or you get the point...

I am very happy so far with a 512MB stick of Samsung PC2700 with my 1.6A / P4B266-C overclocked rig. Right now it runs perfect at 2-2-2-5 at 150Mhz FSB and I will be going up up and away with that once I get a new PSU (I hope 😉 )

Get the Samsung! 😀

Regards,

dont mean to butt in on the thread but i have a sort of related Q
im gonna be using an Epox 4BDA2+ motherboard and i was told i couldnt use 333 ram with it. But i must be missing something because alot of ppl here seem to be using 333 with motherboards that i would have thought wouldnt accomodate it. So, can i or cant i use 333?
this might be a silly Q but im still learnin 🙂

Check my rigs below. I use the same board. You can use DDR333. The 4BDA has a 4:3 memory setting that works like this:
FSB x 2 (DDR) x 1.333 = DDR speed
100 FSB = DDR266
133 FSB = DDR355
150 FSB = DDR400

ok so if i get my 1.8A and 333 ram, changing the memory setting is all i'll need to do? I will learn more about the ins and outs once i have it because i'll be able to play with it a bit... but would i be right in assuming that the mobo is set at default to use 266 ram, and that it wouldnt be changing anything else other than allowing the board to utilise the 333 memory?
I just notice that youve overclocked your cpu and wonder if this is part of what i'll have to do or if its completely seperate?

ok thanks in advance for your help because im sure you've had to 'dumn down' your prefectly good explanations many times for ppl like me. i appreciate the replies...theyre very helpful.

thanks

Uh, I didn't think CAS had anything to do with bandwidth. I thought DDR was "double", period, regardless of column address latency. Are you saying that your memory bandwith will be different for CAS 2 RAM vs. CAS 2.5?

I was under the impression that most mbs would let you set a clock multiplier ratio (4:3, 1:1, etc), and that, combined with FSB speed, x2 for any type of DDR memory, was the sole determinate of your memory bandwidth.

Am I incorrect here?

Thanks for any info.
Jeff

I dont get what you mean. The 8irxp is an i845 board right? CAS is not a multipler. If you are running 133 FSB, your DDR speed is 266 unless you have a mobo that will allow 4:3 mem ratio to get higher. 133 FSB on the 8irxp is 266 DDR, cas2 or cas2.5, it doesn't change that.

Good. Thanks oldfart. I was just starting to think I might be getting a handle on all this, and that post threw me for a loop.

One question, though. Since none of the existing 845 boards "officially" support 133 FSB, but they do officially support DDR266, doesn't it follow that they must all provide a 4:3 multiplier, at least for 100 FSB?

Jeff

They all provide 4:3. Most will not allow it @ 133 FSB and above. The cutoff changes from board to board. I think the MSI is in the 12x FSB area. The EPOX is the only one I know of that will allow it @ any FSB.

😱Sorry guys I screwed up , I don't know what I was thinking , when I set host/dram clock control to 2.0 thats when it runs at 266 . Sorry for the confusion and thanks old fart for setting me straight.

question:

i read somewhere that samsung has there ram made by third party manufacturers and that the best samsung ram is actually the samsung original which can be found at newegg.com. googlegear.com is also selling one for a lot cheaper adn i was wonderin gif anyone could tell me if this was the samsung original... thanks!

Check it out

heya oldfart, do you know a good place where i could buy a memory ratio? 😉
im gonna need some 466DDR 😀

does the epox offer any ratios @ 166-176fsb?

Geez Thugs. I wouldn't touch that system of yours That thing kicks some serious @ss. Speed seems to keep creeping up. The Epox has 4:3 availble @ any FSB all the way to 200. Its amazing. You are @ DDR352 with a 1:1! DDR466. Now that would be cool.
