after much debating I have decided to go for a p4 1.8A and overclock (at least 2.4 maybe a little higher) hoping to get a sis648 board but I have to order next week so may go with the asusp5S533, though I would like USB2 and firewire (serial ata is nice as well) don?t need onboard sound. Anyway I am ordering a 512mb stick of ddr and was wondering what would be the best to get (at a relatively reasonable price) I saw mushkin pc3000 (overclock pc2700) at newegg for 170, I guess I could go up to 215 for the corsair ddr3200 but with a cas of 2.5 I would underclock it anyway to get the latency correct (2-2-2), so I am not sure what to order? Any advice would be appreciated; advice on what board to get would also be nice (I will post on the motherboard forum for that though).

Can't go wrong with a PC2700 slab of Crucial. A lot of people have had their slabs od PC2100 running at PC2700, so the PC2700 should do everything you ask of it.

thanks but unfortunately I need to order soon and crucial is out of stock on the 512 pc2700, I actually have 2 256 pc 2100 from crucial in my athlon machine (1.4, becoming second machine) and was thinking of keeping that their and getting a single 512 stick for my new machine, maybe I will move that over, use the pc 2100 128 and another 256 meg chip for the athlon, but I want to order the memory at the same time I order the mb and proc, so I wont know what my current crucial can do before I order, and crucial shows their 2700 as cs2.5, can it be run at cs 2, or not? Thanks

the corsair pc3200 cs2 is not available and they want 216 for their cs2.5, even the cs2.0 is only tested at 2.0 at 185mhz not the 200 which they suggest by saying cs2.0 at pc3200, but I am looking at it, I wonder if it is worth the 50$ more then the pc3000 from mushkin, considering they are both just overclocked pc2700.

Samsung Original pc2700 is also fine for overclocking. I can get my sticks to run @ 187.5MHz 2.7v 2-3-3-6:)

I have been thinking about the samsung but newegg has the dtl only, which I have heard does not overclock like the older ctl chips. How well does crucial pc2700 overclock, I have always used crucial but it would take a significant overclock for that two match the mushkin or corsair, if the new samsung works I might look at that, if not maybe the corsair extreme, though 216 seems like a lot for ddr, considering when I bought my pc2100 last year (from crucial 2 chips 256 megs) I paid $80 for 512.

I dont see the cas2 ddr3200 from corsair for less then $250 which is too much, I could see $200 or $210, but not much more, would the 2.5 be worth that much more then the mushkin or samsung?

It should be fine...since O/C is not only relied on the RAM alone...must also consider other setup. CAS 2 & 2.5 will affect minimal differences in O/C anyway.

By it do you mean the mushkin, Samsung or the cs2.5 corsair? I am hoping to use an asus sr78x (if it is out in time) undecided at the moment if it isn?t, and have an antec 1080b with all 5 case fans running so cooling shouldn?t be that much of a problem, I would like a motherboard that can lock the pci/agp bus as I have no idea how my tuner (Hauppauge wintv pvr) would react to an overclocked pci bus. I will be using the Intel stock cooling, and will keep the voltage increase to a minimum.

The Corsair XMS is awesome ddr, it doesn't matter what the CAS is. We've done a lot of tests here in the last month or so, and cas doesn't affect performance hardly at all. With the XMS3000 or 3200 you have plenty of headroom when you're trying to max your cpu out. I think you're limiting yourself by waiting for cas 2. HTH :)

Thanks, I didn?t say I was waiting for it, I said it was to expensive at the moment, I am waiting for the asus sr78x (for firewire, usb2, and serial ata over the asus 648 motherboard), I guess I will pay the $216 for the corsair, but I still find it somewhat absurd that I am paying nearly three times what I paid for ddr last summer. I have a few days to make my decision as I am waiting for the motherboard (CPU motherboard memory and additional fans will be in the same order to minimize shipping costs), thanks for the advice.

Understand completely, I can't believe the prices myself! :Q I think I got one of the very last 512 sticks of XMS3200 at newegg before they started going up, it was literally the next day...whew!

That's not a bad price, thanks CrazySaint! :) Though we've never ran tests to prove it, I think most of us would agree that XMS3000 and 3200 is essentially the same ram, one just being rated higher...;)
