I have used a few and have had mixed results, from extremely perfect and easy installs (a netgear router) to bricked units

What's a good one right now - with relatively easy installs (I much prefer web gui updates since I'm mac based and it's a bitch to do command prompt based updates) and good performance?

Thanks!

My WRT54G and WRT54GS have not failed me yet. Both on DD-WRT. I'm sure there's better. I believe Buffalo has some good offerings. As for DD-WRT vs. Tomato, I'm not sure but of the others like HyperWRT and some other that I tried, DD-WRT wins HANDS DOWN.

I gotta suggest the Networking forum as your router of choice...

JK, I suggest the Buffalo WHR-G54 for your needs. I use it with tomato, but I installed DD-WRT first and it worked well (I also vote for tomato over DD-WRT though).

Been using the WRT54GL w/ DD-WRT for a little more than a year. No problem here.

Not sure which of the Linksys routers are better, but if you do get one of them then replace the router's antennas w/ high gain omni-directional antennas and your console's / computer's wifi adapters w/ high gain directional antennas aimed towards the router.

It depends on the hardware revision. See the wiki page for more details:

Check the DD-WRT wiki for the amount of available RAM on each router version.

Look up the fonera router. Perfect for my xbox and PC that need to be bridged, it's smallish/tiny and I've been using them for years without problems.

+1 for simplicity when using tomato on a wrt54g(s) but the little guy is starting to show it's age.

I have to say that I used dd-wrt for a WDS at my last job and it was nearly flawless for years when using intel wNIC-based lappies and setting the roaming aggressiveness appropriately.
