The rebate form says "dated original sales reciept", but a seperate "rebate reciept" printed out at the register. Should I send that one in, or the original one? (Or perhaps a copy of the original one?)
It's interesting that they: 1) ask for both the original reciept and UPC, 2) state that "incomplete/non-compliant rebate claims will not be processed", and 3) "Materials submitted become property of Best Data Products Inc., and will not be returned".
Since they: a) ask you for originals, and b) state that all materials submitted become their property, couldn't they basically deny you the rebate for some stupid reason, and then you can't dispute it because you don't have the original reciept? And if you don't send the original, and send a copy instead, they can claim that your rebate submission isn't compliant, and deny you the rebate that way too?
I bought two of these last night, on seperate reciepts, and the whole deal sounds a tiny bit more shady than other operations. Especially the fact that they have a rebate checking questionare thing on their web site, and state that it may take 12 weeks or longer to process. I also noticed that in their tech-support site for this HSP (host signal processing - aka pure software modem), under the sections for poor performance or disconnects, they only mention phone line quality issues, and don't even mention CPU power or load issues causing dropouts or disconnects. (Which, AFAIK, will happen with pure software modems, if some task uses the CPU exclusively for more than N ms. It also states on their web site that a Pentium 233 MMX is the min. CPU required, whereas the box states a Pentium II 266Mhz is required. Does anyone know if an AMD K6 or K6-2 CPU will work? I'm guessing that the drivers actually require MMX support, so any non-MMX CPU is probably out.
It's really sad, I bought this super-duper-el-cheapo modem, to replace my fabulously top-of-the-line USR Courier v.Everything external, because I need v.92 support, and USR has, to my knowledge, never released the firmware upgraded needed for the older models. At least I can't find it anywhere on the web. (I did have a link pointed out by someone else, of a fellow selling v.Everything externals, that originally shipped as v.34 (as did mine), advertising it as flashed to v.92. This is interesting, as the needed update isn't on USR's own site.)
I keep telling myself, even if I don't get the rebate, it's only $10, it's only $10... but on ATHD, $10 goes a long way! This forum has become nearly a religion for me.
