Best data recovery tools?

Trying GetDataBack right now. (I'll let it run while I go to work) Any good ones you all have good experience with?

My hard drive:
It wouldn't open a directory. It had trouble copying A LOT. Eventually windows did a check disk on it. Directory vanished. Still registers over 100GB of space being taken up by that one directory. (5000+ photos)

GetDataBack will probably work- if the drive isn't failing which it may well be.

R-Studio is very good, but it's not free.

TestDisk is good and free, but not the easiest.

But the best data recovery tools are your own backups. No other recovery tool comes close to proper backups.

Incidentally, if the drive is failing, it is imperative that the bits be copied to another drive ASAP.

Running data recovery SW on a failing drive could be enough to kill it altogether. In that case, the drive should be cloned bit for bit to another drive, and the recovery performed on the clone.

Used GetDataBack with much success. It's recovered a lot of files. Mind you, it took some work and knowledge of what the file names were to get 4000+ photos back, but it's working. 😛
