Best CRT

I'm looking for a 20" + new CRT to hold me out until SED's come out. I have plenty room (corner desk) so that is not an issue. I'm using for gaming and CAD work until SED's prove to be better, at which time I'll give to Wife for her Photo work. I do'nt want a used or refurb and plan on owning for a while. I've looked all over the net for advice and it's not easy finding for the CRT's. Can any one suggest which CRT monitor is best bet?
Thanks

Mitsubishi 2070SB or Sony FW900. They both have different strengths but are pretty much the best out there. Although you're not going to be getting either one brand new these days; used ones off ebay are your best option. The FW900 is much more commonly sold there.

qft. fw900s in like new condition are popular and common.

Then again I'm very partial to my T766.

Yea none of the higher end PC CRTs are being made anymore ..,But I bought my FW900 used off Ebay back in September (manf. date may 2002) and have no regrets, Awesome monitor.

Hey Guys, thanks for the replies. I realize that they made better CRT's than they do now, but of the ones that you can still buy new, are there no good ones worth the purchase? What about Viewsonic G225FB or the Samsung 1100DF?

The viewsonic G225FB has some nice specs. I have a discontinued Viewsonic 22" P225F with similiar specs and its a fantastic monitor. I have not used any of their graphics series though.

I've only owned Nokia's and Sony's, but the G225fb has a max resolution of 2048*1536 @80hz and a .2mm pitch (they don't say, but I'm sure that's horizontal). Seems like a decent monitor and I can get it delivered for $458. I just wish I could see one or find someone that has one and can fill me in.
Anyone?
Thanks

I spent lot of time finding myself last good CRT but failed.

Theres no nice trinitron/diamondtron monitors anymore. All the current shadow mask ones are just so bad that id rather just go LCD instead, but even thats not the best option since i need monitor that is able to perform in graphics as well as in fast paced games (FPS etc.). Which it should be able to with those price tags.

I just dont like the situation with monitors these days. As much as everyone else, id like to have nice flat, light weight etc. LCD but the cost, in terms of money and performance is just too big at the moment.

...but thats just me.

Yeah the crt's are'nt as good anymore. The major players have dropped their efforts on crt's. But hopefully somone can enlighted me on what is currently availiable good or bad.
Thanks

I still have a Sony HMD-A400 19" trinitron that i will not get rid of because of the lack of good gaming CRT's and LCD's. It came form an older Sony VAIO system but it's a perfect match with the Antec LanBoy case. Gaming with it is still superb, the only drawback is that i can't get 75 Htz @ 1600x1200.

I got an NEC FE2111SB (refurb) for $350 from overstock.com. It's still in very good condition. The brightness, color reproduction, and geometry are excellent. If you can find one of these under $400 I would say go for it.

I don't think there are many brand new ones that could be recommended. Not only are they mostly low end or midrange units, but the manufacturers have done so much cost cutting that the quality control on them is absolute crap these days. Uncorrectable problems with focus, convergence, geometry and color purity that are quite common with almost any CRT you can buy new. 🙁

the best are definately the NEC (mitsubishi). i own NEC FP2141sb and its perfect in every way

That one is the same thing as the 2070SB and is indeed basically perfect.

Unfortunately NEC's new model (as120) has a max res of 1600*1200 and refresh at 76hz max. Not as good as the Samsung or Viewsonic. I've heard (from the distributors) that the Samsung might have a little bit of an edge over Viewsonic. Anymore input?
Thanks

Well you guys have me changing my mind about used monitors. It sounds as though the NEC 2070SB or the FE2111SB are good monitors with the better being the 2070SB. I've found some used ones with about $100 seperating the two. Is the $100 more worth getting the 2070 over the 2111? Keep in mind that the 2111 is a couple of years newer.
Thanks

I have a Rasterops Superscan 21" CRT (Hitachi) and its .22 dpi is super. You can still find these monitors available either as Rasterops or Hitachis on the refurbished market. Its a big monitor but for sharpness and clarity, you won't be disappointed.
