Best CPU upgrade?

Pardon my ignorance, but I have been out of the hardware game for a while.

I built a top end system 1.5-2 years ago that is still going pretty strong. The only thing that I really need to upgrade at this point is the CPU.

I have a EPoX EP-9NPA+ Ultra S939 motherboard and currently a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1.8GHz Socket 939 Processor.

What is the best processor that I can buy that will work with this motherboard? I know it has to be S939, but will the Epox motherboard support an Opteron dual core CPU? What about AMD FX CPUs? Are those as good or better than dual core opterons?

Or maybe I can get more out of the current processor by overclocking? From what I understand the Venice processors were good for that. I thought I tried once before but didn't get too far with it. Maybe my ram is limiting my over clocking abilities. Currently have CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (4 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) ram.

Thanks, it looks like I have a choice between either an Opteron 146/165, an FX-55, an X2 (up to 4800 toledo), or a regular Athlon 64 CPU

What would be my best bet out of those choices? FX-55's seem hard to come by. Maybe an X2 4800+ toledo? How do those stack up to the Opteron and FX-55 CPUs?
