Wondering what is the current best duo, CPU+Mobo for under 300 shipped for gaming with a side of video editing?

1. Have One GPU (so SLi/CF not required)
2. Have 8 GB DDR3 1066 (so 4x+ ram slots req but im sure thats a given)
3. Will OC the CPU

I posted this in motherboards forum but that place is about dead.

general hardware is better for this, but i'd say for video editing and gaming, go fx8350 and any decent am3+ board and get 16-32gb ram.

The thing with the FX is that its real great when application actually use all the cores. However the vast majority are reliant on per-core performance, so most of its power is goes unused except when Im rendering a video, and in those times I can just go eat something or have it as a background task. When gaming I am going to be right at the computer.

It sucks because my current bored might be able to take an FX. But I dont want to do another upgrade and find most of my games get almost nothing from it because they are using 1-2 cores only.

Not to mention the FX is about half as energy efficient. Over the course of ownership (4 years) it would cost me 100$ more than the intel chip. Ive been with AMD for 7+ years now, and I just done see a real option there anymore, unless games start quickly becoming multithreaded, like, yesterday, and that does not seem to be the trend (console ports to PC)

Let me get this straight:

1) You don't want AMD
2) You want to OC
and
3) You want a CPU and motherboard for less than $300 shipped.

Seriously?

Does your video editing warrant HT?

If not, pick up a 3570K with a proven overclock (high OC, low voltage) off the FS/FT forum and pair with a good overclocking board.

I want options, AMD or otherwise. I have a few already, (The FX series included, but it is lower on the list) but Im looking for more. If you 'seriously' dont know of any or you're going to give off a snob attitude: -> Door

The video editing can live without HT. Its 80/20 games/editing, so a strong emphasis on gaming longevity. Ive been looking at the FX series but the single thread preformance has scared me away a bit plus the efficiency is low even compared to the 2500K, the 2500k and the 3570K (all $200 range leaving ~100$ for a mobo). Im just nto sure where to go. 3570 would be roughly 25~ more than a 2500K, and im unsure if that 25$ would be better put into a mobo or into the 3570K.

Thanks for mentioning the FS/FT forum, Ive only been using the google shopping search. I'm willing to buy used, and now that you mention it I'd be selling my AMD Phenom965BE + board to help do this. So I'll look into that!

Cheapest z87 board you can get, and it's in a combo, something has to give on your end or drive to a micro center.

Or I could just not go z87. Or I could look at somewhere else than newegg or I could get used or... etc (the 'etc' is why I posted here to find). 300 is my self imposed limit, unless $10 more somehow gets me a large performance jump from some crazy sale. I know its possible (people have done it before!), Im just trying to find the best ones.

I personally think a 2600K or 2700K might be better than a 3570K for this budget. Games are beginning to use the extra threads, and they generally overclock real well.

Depending on your current motherboard, you could just get an FX 8320, OC it, and 4 years later still be ahead of the game.

No, no, no, definitely go Intel.

Yeah if by 'game' you dont mean 'the vast majority of actual games', then Id agree with you. Per core the i5s (even a generation ago) destroy the FX series. Why would I spent more money for less again? Unless I see a 8350 for $50 less than an 2500k or you can convince the gaming industry to put out more games that actually use more than one core, let alone four, for the games I play, then you can't blame me for being practical. :thumbsup:http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/697?vs=701

Ive been hearing the 2600K has issues with OC due to HT over the 2500K. If its not really an issue with moderate OCs then yeah I'll consider them as well.

Well, I can say from personal experience that for the 2700K it is not.
