Best CPU/Mainboard Type for the money for BOINC SETI@Home

Just fired up a few machines for the cause, but I want to get a farm going again while I have some $ to do it 🙂. I want to throw a board together to start out with, and grow from there. Anything under a grand is fair game.

Whats the best dollar to WU CPU/Mainboard setup? Q6600? A quad? A dual operion 939? I am a little strapped for time, so I can't do the research myself 🙁 but my goal is to boot from a flash drive to win xp (since I have an extra copy ATM). The board will need to use pc2-4200 or 5300 memory since I have a ton of it. Or pc2-4200 laptop memory since I have a spare gig of that too. Onboard video and a single lan port is all that is required. I also know that there has been some talk about running it on GPU's since GPU's rock at floating point operations, so that is also fair game if the cost/WU makes sence.

Best case, the mainboard and CPU (and GPU) will have to be at Frys since I have some time and can run there tomorrow. If I have to ship it, then I will have to wait a while as I won't have time to assemble the thing 🙁

Thanks Guys 🙂

First thoughts (running 2003 server)? Not sure if this is $ effective, but the top dog on the stats (that I can see anyway) is returning 20,000 ppd with a setup very similar.
2 of these: E5410 Quad = $800
1 of these: ASUS DSBV = $200

Maybe this one:
1 of these: Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
1 of these: 946GZ7MA-8KS2H

The Q6600s seem to get you the most bang for the buck. They are smooth overclockers too.

I ran Seti during the recent Gaunlet and got just over 4,000 credits @ day after loading up with one of the optimized clients. I've since switched back to Rosetta where I'm getting a little over 2,000 credits @ day. What's really nice is I'm using less electricty than when the same case and components were running a Pentium D. 🙂

Glad to see you back in the DC Forums and crunching with the TeAm. You need to get some of those other mods to join in. Especially that Harvey guy. 😛

- There's no GPU client for SETI, only for Folding@Home
- A Q6600 is the currently the best option for a dedicated cruncher
- 939 is a dead end with no more updates to come
- the memory will hinder your CPUs performance a lot, if it's not matched. For the Q6660 you should at least use DDR2-800 or higher, if you overclock
