Best cpu/gpu value combo for gaming

I have about $500 for a cpu/gpu combo. I'm trying to maximize my gaming potential and am looking for suggestions. I don't have any brand loyalty to nvidia/ati/intel/amd so all options are on the table. Is it better to spend $300+ on a conroe and get a new 7900gs or spend 150 on a cpu and 350 on the gpu. Or 200 cpu (low end conroe) and 300 for a 7900gt? Where do the ati fit in? I've been out of the loop for a while so I haven't kept up with the latest. Oh one last thing this rig will not be overclocked so keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestions.
