If you have $105 for a hard drive make sure you get a 7200 rpm one, even if it's smaller. It will make all the difference in the world. A slow hard drive will turn that fast system into a sluggish pos.

Yes, 7200rpm HDD.

Also, 2 x 256mb DDR. If one stick goes bad, you're still in business.

And, the 256 stick is now $69 at Crucial, free shipping in US.

Umm, DDR2100 + P4. I heard this is not the best combination, maybe DDR333 or RDRam otherwise you are probably better off with an XP based system. Also are you planning on overclocking. Anyway you are probably better off getting advice from the P4 gurus in this forum. I agree with the 7200rpm hard drive, it makes all the difference. On your budget you may also want to tone down a bit on the vid card, maybe a 4200.

best cpu? you can probably get an alpha or power3 for under $1000 but that's just for the cpu

<< best cpu? you can probably get an alpha or power3 for under $1000 but that's just for the cpu >>

Hehe, was just gunna state that. Or get dual P4 Prestonia Xeons

DDR-RAM: The ram prices are to high now. Buy a 256MB DDR-RAM and upgrade later.
CPU: Athlon XP is cheaper and faster. I suggest a 1800+.
CD-ROM: You can also buy a DVD-ROM
Motherboard: I'm using Soltek DRV75 Rev. 4. They are fast and overclockable!!

You can save more than $100 without any sacrifice in performance or stability by getting an Athlon XP 1800+ ($115) and an ECS K7S5A ($52) motherboard. The K7S5A has a very good NIC on-board, so you don't need to buy one. You would need to get a heatsink/fan for the Athlon (a good combination can be had for $20).

I agree that you should get a 7,200 rpm harddrive by all means; I'd advise against getting two 256 MB DDR sticks. Get the 512 MB stick, that will make upgrading easier later on.

Or wait five days to see what the Intel price move will bring. I bet the result will be a price and performance about identical to the XP 1800+ (give or take a percent or two).

Don't buy a P4 unless you are willing to OC. While they're "snappy" at stock speeds, they won't really impress you. I'd also say get an EPoX 4BDA using the Intel i845 chipset as opposed to a SiS chipset. Supposedly the i845 can overclock higher due to being made on a .18 micron process as opposed to SiS's .25 micron chipset, not to mention you're buying a SiS chipset over an Intel chipset with no price difference.😕

I also say go for the 1.6A. More chance to hit a higher bus speed, and get higher memory speeds. Memory bandwidth is what the P4 is ALL about, you give it, it eats it up.

BTW, a DDR solution can supply enough bandwidth for higher clocked P4 systems if you're not an ignorant hardware website reviewer*cough* Tom Pabst! *cough*. My EPoX 4BDA gives me 250MB/s more bandwidth than a dual channel PC800 setup with a 374Mhz ram clk.

Here is my suggestion:

NEWEGG

$42 EVERCASE 300W P4, Truely Screwless ATX MID Tower Case. BEIGE (newegg)
$133 Intel Pentium 4 1.6A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor (newegg)
$115 WD WESTERN DIGITAL EIDE HARD DRIVE 80GB 7200RPM MODEL WD800BB (newegg)
$27 AOPEN CD-956 56x CDROM (newegg)
$9 SONY 1.44MB 3.5 INCH INTERNAL FDD DRIVE (newegg)
$259 VGA LEADTEK GeForce4 TI4400 128M TV (newegg)
$9 Dlink DFE-530TX+ Fast Ethernet Adapter 10BT/100BTX (newegg)
$24 Microsoft OEM Internet Keyboard and IntelliMouse PS/2 Bundle (newegg)
---------------------------

Total: $662.33 ($44.33 shipping to NY)

GOOGLEGEAR

$78 GIGABYTE GA-8SRX SIS 645 CHIPSET ULTRA ATA100 (googlegear)
$132 Samsung 512MB PC2700 333MHz DDR Memory (googlegear)
---------------------------

Total: $226.50 ($16.50 shipping to NY)

Grand total: $888.83

The differences I made was the processor, motherboard, memory, hard drive, and keyboard. The Gigabyte 8SRX is a better SiS645 board, and cheaper as well. If you must, get the 1.8A, but I think the 1.6A is a better value, since it overclocks quite well. Samsung PC2700 512mb at $132 is a bargain, plus it is true PC2700 memory, not overclocked. I have it, and it is very good. Like bigshooter said, get the 7200rpm drives, and the WD is only $10 more for 80gb. You will notice the difference. The Microsoft KB/Mouse bundle is excellent for the price.

If you do decide to get AMD, substitute the motherboard and CPU for the EPOX 8K3A+ and Athlon XP 1800+, both together are $230 at newegg, about $20 more than the Intel combo.

Good luck!

....Hmm...but can i overclock with this mobo to ~ 2.2 -> 2.5?, also, jumpresless bios is a essential for me, does this include that?

With the Gigabyte 8SRX and P4 1.6A, I was able to get to 2.22GHz with very little effort. Was upto 2.3GHz, but Prime95 gave round errors, so I tuned it back down. My system has been rock solid for about 2 weeks now. Which motherboar doesn't come with jumperless BIOS? Everything is done in the BIOS, so no need to worry. The Gigabyte is a great overclocking board, it will just depend on how well your P4 and memory overclocks.

sorry... I couldn't resist. "Best CPU for Under $1000 w/ Shipping Included...Hmm" I'd love to see what mobo you would choose to drop a $1,000 processor in.
