Best CPU for Seti

Regulator

Senior member
Hi,
I'am planning to build a computer soon. I was wondering which CPU would be best for Seti. I don't want to spend over $500 for MB+CPU.

1)Athlon Classic(1ghz)
2)Thunderbird-SocketA(1ghz)
3)Pentium IV (??)
4)Duron(??)

I'm going with the ASUS CUSL2 motherboard ($148 from mwave.com) and a pretested 700E @ 1GHz+ from compuwiz1 (Anantech member) - Info Here. You can get a P3-700 @ 933 for $175 if 1GHz doesn't intrest you.

Also got some Mosel Vitelic PC133 cas2 7ns (PC143) SDRAM from john (another Anandtech member) - Info Here

FYI - The price on john's RAM is *extremely* low right now. I paid significantly more than that just a week ago (I can tell myself that mine's better). 😉

Both john and computwiz1 test their stuff and were very good to deal. Responded quick and very helpful.

Good luck,

Rob

Oooh.. Thanks for the link to the RAM.. Was looking for some nice CAS2 133+ 🙂

Now to do something about that entire "no money" thing...

Well clock for clock it appears the coppermine is still the fastest around. But with the thunderbird being able to reach higher speeds it's able to keep up. Looks like it comes down to the price between the two.🙂

My T-Bird 800 turns out more Wu's a day than my P-!!! 866, thats all I know. 🙂 then again my K6-2 400 (Linux) beats my K6-2 450 (Win98) by 4-5hrs per Wu!?! So maybe a T-Bird + Linux is the way to go. 🙂

Shuxclams some thing isn't right if that's the case.

According to TLC's benchmark page:

Hellburner's P3-866mhz with cas2 ram did their benchmark wu in 3:16.

A 1.133ghz T-Bird did it in 3:01

The top was a P3-700 @ 1085mhz flying through it in just 2:25

I'm assuming all of the info on their page is correct.🙂

"Why spend $100 on PC-133 when you can get PC-150 for $90?" - office boy

Because john guarantees that each stick will run at least 143FSB at CAS 222. Here's his quote: "I have personally had this memory up to 158MHz cas2, and others have had it at 160+." :Q

I've already got 2 128MB sticks of his RAM so when I get my P3-700 from compuwiz1 I'm gonna slap it in my CUSL2, crank the FSB to 143, and see what this thing can do to a SETI unit.
