I use these programs exclusively for daily work. MY 1.4ghz T-bird is definitely not cutting it anymore (although it was a workhorse while it lasted). I do imaging and video editing. What CPU should I get that will satisfy my needs for programs by these companies? I'm already planning several gigs of RAM. Just FYI i'm not into overclocking and my budget is around $300 for the CPU. Thanks.

Why?? 1GB should be more than enough. Anything above that is overkill.

As for Processor I'd get an Athlon64 3500+ (90nm version), which is $293 on newegg.

If you meant $300 for CPU & Mobo then go for a 3000+and an Asus A8V deluxe mobo.

voodoo1694,

Actually I am looking for some suggestions too, so I'll keep an eye on your posting.
I got one up there too, as I can't decide between the 2. Most of the time I use Avid and Ulead, but it shouldn't matter.
Well, I hope we get some solid suggestions, Good luck. Let me know what you decided to go with.

Thanks

i'm a self proclaimed AMD fanboy, but for lots of adobe photoshop work etc, my nod goes for a p4. HT helps a lot in this situation, and i think youd benefit from it doing the sort of stuff you mentioned.
all the best

if you overclock i'd say the 90nm A64 3000, but since you don't, the 90nm A64 3500. also the 3500 seems to be at a good sweet spot. its not that much more than the 3000, but its a lot cheaper than everything above it. and at the similar price point, i do believe that you'll find the below article shows that it beats the 3.4GHz P4 pretty consistently. it also runs cooler, is 64 bit, which is bound to kick in one of these days (it did over a year ago if you use linux) and probably give you a double digit boost in many of your math intensive media apps, it has a serious virus feature and super low memory bandwidth thanks to the integrated memory controller.

the P4 has none of that and runs very very hot. most of what the P4 has going for it is optimizations by software makers, like adobe, and you have to suspect, that they are gonna snap out of it and start optimizing for the A64 soonish if they havent already. also, i do believe that intel is over-rated on the video front.

check the benchmarks...

I disagree. I by no means am a heavy Graphics user, but with Maya, Photoshop, and UEd opened my Memory useage hits > 1.3gb. My 1gb handles it reasonably well, but switching between the apps causes delays as things get swapped from Virtual Memory. 1gb does ok, but 1.5-2gb is very useful for the Graphics program user.

I can tell 512 MB on my system is not enough for some of aapz I use. Athlon XP 2400+ take a lot of time processing large video clips with Adobe Preimre 6
