what's the best cpu cooler for 1.2ghz athlon that I can get less that 30. i saw the globalwin fop 38 but i heard it's hard to put on. the motherboard i will be using is the MSi K7T Pro2A. i know that the taisol cek42 [or somethign like that] will not fit. i like taisol's because they're all around good....quiet and good at cooling [but not the best]. i just can't find any place that sells them.

FOP38 is not that hard to put on, its just hard to bear with: its a loudass mofo.

the next best thing would be the Taisol 742 but, as you said, it would not fit, so the next next best thing would be an Alpha, it should be about 30 bucks.

The smaller Tai Sol works well for my 900Mhz T-Bird, very easy to put on, quiet

Shu8:

There are 2 stores I recommend for shopping for cooling products:

2cooltek

and

Millisec

My good friend has ordered from 2cooltek and says great things about them and my roommate just finished a transaction with Millisec. He has a TBird 1100 with the Alpha PAL6035 along with the Delta fan combo. The Delta fan is an upgrade, there are 2 packages available on Millisec's site. If you don't want a loud fan (although it does cool better because of the 7000 rpm speed) then buy the other combo. His system idles at about 27 degrees Celcius so I'd go with that cooler. Very nice! =)

I'd like to see benches comparing the new Taisol CGK742 and the Hedgehog. The CGK742 beats both the FOP38 and the PAL6035, but I'm not sure about the Hedgehog, only because I've never seen its benches.

You can't really trust any of these "comparisons" if htey are done on Socket A boards and measured with an in-socket thermistor.

Pal6035, FOP Series, Taisol CGK47.., and the Hedgehog are all fairly comparable. The taisol is the quietest one of them.

Only the FOP38 has the Delta 38CFM fan pre-installed. Any of them is a great choice, but obviously ;) I am biased toward the Taisol CGK742.

Where did you find the 1.2ghtz T Bird processor? I have had one on order for 2 months. What company had the New Bird?

I suggest the good old trusty Alpha PAL 6035, this buddy will never fail u in cooling, keeps my tbird 900 at 43 idle

People are getting too hung up playing the numbers game. Install the heatsink, overclock if needed, run some benchmarks and some stability tests, and if things turn out fine and the system runs stable with no problems - then who gives a rats a$$ about the accuracy of the temps? Seriously, It really doesn't matter.

It's like the Tilt Steering in my new Dodge Dakota. Set it to a comfortable level then leave it the heck alone and get on with enjoying the vehicle for what it was meant for.

Rudee,

It isn't a matter of a numbers game. How can one accurately compare heatsinks if you cannot even accurately read the temps?.

For the individual user, accuracy may or may not be important. But at the same time, comparisons of temp, of which heatsink is best, should really be put off until a proper and more accurate way of comparing temp is devised. And not to mention all the temp comparisons where people come in claiming CPU temps of under 40C(including you Rudee, who claimed a 42C temp on a 1.2ghz t-bird. When people post/compare socket A temps, since they are inaccurate, it only leads to confusion.

Not to mention, I have posted this numerous times, do not compare socket A temps. If you're using an updated bios, it gives you a good "rough" idea of what your core temp would be. If your cpu runs fine, and the temp is within "reasonable" limits, then don't worry about it, and don't try to compare temps. When people, yourself included, stop posting both ridiculous temp readings and temp readings in general, then I will stop telling people not to trust the readings.
