Best CPU available for my old BX slot1

Err ,yeah some info would be handy!

,like mbrd make,model & revision number 🙂

Doh!.. sorry forgot you guys would need that type of information.

I don't have the model number with me, but it is a first generation Intel BX mainboard. I got it when the PII 350 first came out. I'll post the model number when I get home tonight 🙂

thanks again!

You are out of luck, only the later generation motherboards from Intel will support the PIII. Towards the back of the MB where the AGP slot is there is a bar code with a number on it. You can check the number against the list on Intel's website. Check under the PIII Archived motherboards list. But generally, if u got you mb around 1998, then it wont. Also BIOS needs to be updated to support the later proccesors. The last BIOS for the 440bx2 is P17.

Actually, the later BX mobotherboards can take P3 s higher than 800/850. I am running a 900 (flipchip with slotket adapter) in an AOpen AX6BC (slot 1 BX) right now.

If you need a PIII I have a few spares. PIII 550 Katmai slot chip. 600 coppermine fcpga and a 700@933 fcpga. 😉

Not sure what your board can handle but I'm running a 1.1ghz celeron (128k coppermine) on my Abit BH6 with a slocket.
It's a sweet board and I've been using it since celeron 300a ->450mhz days.

If it supports 100mhz FSB, it can probably take a Powerleap Slotket and you can slap in a 1.4ghz Celeron (Tualatin-based). What brand/model is it?

What I need to do to get the PIII 550 slot chip?

You need to find out more about your mb, bios etc. to see what it'll support. You can upgrade with a slot 1 to katmai for sure but not too high.

You could maybe do a P3 slot 1 or socket with slotkit and get up to about a gig or maybe the adaptor for a tualitan.

Remember the BX chipset only does 2/3 on the agp so anything over 100mz overclocks the video.

>Any Slot 1 or FCPGA with 128 cache (.18 micron) will work with a slocket adapter. Be nice if you can fine a 1.1 GIG and overclock it to 1.4 GIG 🙂

>Powerleap Slotket will work up to 1.4 GIG (.13 micron) with 256 cache. I wouldn't recommend this upgrade because by the time you get the powerleap adapter to your door. You could've bought a brand new motherboard that supports the Tualatin chip or better.

>Good luck 🙂

I have an OEM P3 1.1 (100FSB) FC-PGA in a sloket on my ABIT BE6-II 2.0 (440BX). It's the fastest thing that was non-tully and wouldn't require me to overclock the FSB/AGP bus at all.

That's all very well but not all BX mbrds will support FCPGA CPU's
