Contemplating on building a Shuttle SFF and wondering what's the best cpu I can get to oc with it? Don't really want to get A64 as I don't think I'd need such horsepower in my rig...and it'll cost 2x as much :frown: So what's cpu and memory should I get? I don't really have a preference with AMD of Intel athough Intel couldn't beat my $50 XP1700@2.3ghz.
Next is the memory, what should I get? I'd probably be buying 1 gig so any suggestions is welcome.

I'll be pairing this up with a ATI 9600 AIW and some big hd which I haven't decided yet.

Get one fo the new Durons. The Duron 1.6 Ghz runs at 1.5 Vcore default so it would not put out much heat in your SFF case. And i hear they overclock like crazy and the extra cache on them can be unlocked by connecting the L2 bridges or something(you can find guides on the net). Plus it's only $42 so it wont break your wallet.

I ordered one from Newegg and it should come in tomorrow. I'll be sure to inform you guys on how well it overclocks, but from what I have been hearing, 2.1 Ghz at 1.5 V and up to 2.5 Ghz at 1.93+ V. I shall see.

EDIT: For the ram, get some good stuff if you are overclocking. It all depends on your budget. How much are you willing to spend?

the absolute best, thats easy. 1800+ DLT3C JIXHB. runs at 1.45 default, super low temp right there, will run higher with not too much voltage. the more realistic chip would be a barton 2500+. they are almost a guarenteed 3200+, if you're lucky you'll get one that can do 3200+ at default, unlucky you'll get one that can do it with +.05 more, a little more unlucky you'll get one that can do it at +.1 more.

either way make sure you get a good heatsink. if the shuttle sff mobo supports it get an slk-800 with a panaflo l1a. if it doesn't go with an sk-7 l1a.

I'm not a fanboy at all but I do like the P4 c's.
I currently have some cheap spectek pc2700 running dual channel in my box just fine @ 195mhz 3:2 but I do prefer my XMS.

I'll probably be spending ~$280 for the 1gig memory that I'll be getting. I have 1 512meg stick corsair xms 3xxx in my current pc so maybe I'll get that again...or perhaps the mushin this time :)
So I know in the end, I'll probrobably be spending ~$1k for this

$90 amd barton or $170 intel 2.4c
$320 shuttle sff
$280 memory
$150 hd
$120 nec dual burner

This sff rig will be my primary gaming/multimedia machine so I want to suck as much juice out if it as possible.
And yea, I won't mind going with Intel and getting a 2.4c Just hope shuttle releases the new sff 75 out by the time I purchase it this week.

thanks :)

You will most likely run into heat problems with the SFF shuttles. I have one myself and it just has a 1.7 Celery in it. No vid card (is built in) and a 7200 40GB seagate. The amount of heat this thing throws off in incredible. Always more than warm to the touch. I dont know if that means that the aluminum case is doing what it is supposed to do and dissapate heat more efficiently, hence the warm case. But there is almost no "breathing room" inside these SFF's.

I have never tried to OC just for this reason. Just my take on them..

Mine is cool to the touch and way quieter than it was stock while running at 3.5 ghz.
I replaced all the fans and shitcanned the ICE heatpipe in favor of the Alpha 8942.
Temps are "reported" 60c under load running prime95 x 2.

Yes Please, a pic would be great....

What is your Shuttles model? Mine is the SS50.

Thanks.
