Best core i7 overclocking motherboard

Greetings,

I'm going to upgrade to the core i7 using the cheapest processor, and want a high stable overclock with 12GB of ram and the option for 24GB later. Anandtechs mid level recommendation only has 4 dimm slots, and the msi cheap motherboard appears to be a difficult overclocker. I hope to use cheap memory:

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9T-6GBNQ - $280 for 12GB right now on new egg

Any suggestions?

So you don't want the ' Best core i7 overclocking motherboard ' , you want " Best core i7 overclocking motherboard, that support 24g RAM " ?
You might ask in the Motherboard forum ...

DFI has a pretty good reputation..


Gigabyte does too..

However, maxing out six DIMM slots may limit your overclocking potential ..

Yeah, so do many X58 boards right now becuase you can't buy 4GB DDR3 DIMMs. Pretty much all major-tier board companies will release BIOS upgrades to enable this when you actually have the ability to fill these slots with 24GB...This is a non-issue.

Get the P6T Deluxe or the EVGA X58 board as they have the most mature BIOS and have consistently have the best overclocks from what I have seen in the last few months.

Ewiz has a special on a gigabyte x58 board with 6 gigs of supertalent ddr3; about $258 for both. It could sell out at any time. I don't have the link. Check fatwallet.

So far my DFI X58 T3eH8 has been great for overclocking. I should be able to find out its limits this weekend as my memory had to be RMA'ed because one of the three sticks was 1333 instead of 1600. Wonder how that passed QA?

actual one of the major companies (corsair or crucial I think) list some for direct sale. ECC of course.

Thanks everyone for the great responses! I went with the ASUS P6T board and after reading the comments got the extended warrantee. I appreciate the help and pointers to good deals, thanks again!

I used an EVGA with great results, The support team (Jacob) says they have used 24gigs with out a problem but its not offically supported yet. Perhaps some time in the future.

Its also important to note they may have been useing 24gigs with a modified bios, Who knows if it would work with the public bios.

EVGA's tech support is awesome and they fully support overclocking, on their video cards they will take it back even if you modified the HSF just as long as you put the origanal on and their is no physical damage do to modifications when RMA'ed.

Evga and Gigabyte make great boards. I would recommend either the UD5 like I just got, or the Evga like my dad has.

Anandtech thinks that the Asus only supports 12GB because of it's 2-phase uncore PWM vs the 3-phase other companies that support 24GB have.

OP, also, with the i7's right now, YMMV for OCing. Even if you have a great board. Check out the article on the main site between 2 retail purchases.

But what looks like a good overclocker is the eVGA Classified, which is not out yet, but hopefully soon.

EDIT: BTW, I have my i7 920 @ 3.780GHz, 1.225v vCore on my P6T Deluxe w/ 6GB Corsair DDR3-1600 @ 1440 9-9-9-24 1.6 DRAM (1.2375 or so vUnCore). Please note that I'm on watercooling though.
