I used to build budget systems for myself.

Last time around, my friends got the ASUS P4C800-E motherboard for something approaching $200, and I got a P4P800 (Standard). It was a good choice -- now replaced with a P4P800-SE that I picked up for $95 in retail shrink-wrap.

Now, I'm looking at "top-end." I've been following the ASUS boards that include the P5WD2-E, P5B, P5W DH. The P5WD2 has been a disappointment for many people looking to upgrade to Conroe. I had my eye on a workstation motherboard -- the P5WDG2-WS, but it didn't seem "Conroe-ready," and some Newegg customer reviews show varied results. I x-ed my fingers with a thought that this workstation board would come out in revision. It did -- see my query posted a couple hours ago.

But that's over $300. I'd say -- only from what I've heard, and for your needs, the P5W DH should do it. It got a "kick-ass 9" award from Maximum PC -- if you believe everything you read in that mag, but there's probably good reason why they rated it highly.

If you have E6300 or E6400 CPU then it looks like you would be better off with P965 chipset based boards. Currently most popular are:

Asus P5B, Gigabyte DS3 (there are also Deluxe version of Asus and few more versions of Gigabyte P965 boards)

If your CPU of choice is E6600 or higher, then people are getting better results with 975X chipset boards, most popular are:

Asus P5W ..., Intel XBX (aka Bad Axe)

It wasn't my question, but thanks for the clarification, Alex, mah-man.

DSET didn't specify which processor he planned to use, but it certainly may be relevant to the choice.

My own idea "from the git-go" in planning my forthcoming Conroe build was to spring for the E6700 im-mediately. I've heard that the slower and less-expensive processors were more over-clockable than the E6600, E6700 and X6800 -- with the E6600 being the worst.

But that doesn't speak directly to chipset or motherboard choices. I suspect more information will accumulate on the Anandtech forums over the next few months.

bvut if anyone can convince me different Il grab a 6400 and OC the hell out of it

for the time being im stuck on the ASUS P5W DH even if ai get a 6400 id rather have 975x than 965 cause its newer I guess

I did too but i didn't get one and if your wanting to OC i recommend you not too. I have a gigabyte ds3 & e6400 which i would recommend to anyone. Some people with the e6600 are getting as high as 4ghz but not very many. I have even seen some that doesn't get as high as 3.2ghz and most ive seen get around this range for their highest OC. The e6400 are OC so well right now. I have mine at 3.6ghz currently. What do you think would be faster a e6600 at 3.2ghz with 4MB cache or a e6400 at 3.6ghz with 2MB cache? THe choice was easy for me especially considering its cheaper. I would spend the extra money on RAM/PSU. I would recommend G.Skill HZ stuff for ram and i have an OCZ 700w PSU eventhough i think a 600w would be just as good. I just got 700w to more future proof myself.

Actually 975x is an older chipset and 965 is brand new.

I think Im gonna take youre advice on the 6400, but the ASUS P5W-DH's SLi is good bonus do u think if I plugged a 64 into that mobo it would OC at least to 3.4?
also I couldnt find any reviews on the gigabyte ds3 could you link me to any Articles

Also im going to be using alot of 3D max, Maya and photoshop for HWK
gaming is first for me but id also like good performance from those appz u think the 4mb cache would do a big diffrence on it?

Okay its 6400 for sure
-Im leaning at the Q6 because it has quad core support (I dont think DS3 does does it?)

Id like to save money with the DS3 but will a cnps9500 fit on it?
I dont really dig the features that the Q6 has except for quad core unless somone can convince me that its worth the extra 100 or prefrably that its not

and for cooling the Zalman cnps 9500 is my pic
for ram
proly 2GB Patriot DDR2 6400
or OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400

newer bios versions of the Gigabyte boards are said to handle the OCZ's quite well. BTW I'm in the same dilemma - got a brand new system, an E6700 still residing in its sealed box, a pair of OCZ Platinums (DDR2 6400) but no board. I don't know which one's best for my components. The ASUS P5W DH Deluxe is quite expensive and usually not in stock, the Gigabyte boards are all P965 based which is inferior in overclocking potential compared to the 975X's, the 590 SLI chipset is way overdue and might not be released at all in the next couple of months, the Abit AW9D-MAX looks promising but is not available yet and last but not least Intel's Bad Axe board which is a high quality board but must be hardware unlocked to be of any use to overclockers. :p

Well from what people are telling me the 965 are superior for overclocking the 63 and the 6400 for 66 and 6700- 975

Although I dont really like Abit as a company this mobo looks promising
but its 975 and I couldnt find out if it was quad core ready (which is a big plus for me)
if people can tell me that this board is worth the wait ill get it but from the looks of it a 6400 will OC better on a ds3 and a dq6 but i dont think theyve tested that yet not sure tho, If i was gonna grab a 66 I would get this board for sure but im thinking i rather jus save the money now get a quad core ready mobo and when the time comes sell the 64 and get a Kentsfield cpu (hopefully if Intels quad cores are better than AMd's)

Did you look at the anandtech Core 2 Duo overclocking article? Or one of the Core 2 Duo articles... anyways, one of the articles on AT compares performance at roughly the same clock rate between the 4mb 6600 and the 2mb 6400. There is not enough difference between the two to make the E6600 worth the extra money.

AW9D is Kentsfield compatible & the board is supposed to be in retail in the UK this week so I imagine that North America will be similar.

does this mean they overclocked a e6300 to 3.3ghz?? why does it say x6800 under specification
and shows 4mb cache
http://www.nordichardware.com/Reviews/?page=6&skrivelse=489
http://www.nordichardware.com/skrivelser_img/489/473.gif

well i found this at least
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/09/01/first_look___abit_aw9d_max/6.html

so that means the 6400 should overclock well with it when they fix the bios

so then should I wait for more in depth reviews (a part 2 will be coming out form anandtech soon right?)
or should I get it first day it comes out, but when and were is it?

Cheers!

For the absolute "best" OC motherboard, the Asus P5WDG2 WS Pro is the way to go. It's expensive, and hard to find - but it's a spectacular overclocker.
