Best cooling for Opteron 170?

What would a good aftermarket cooler be for an opty 170? I am going to pair it with an A8N32-SLI card. Is stock cooling enough for a conservative OC, or should I pick up an Arctic Freezer 64 or Thermaltake Big Typhoon?

I personally haven't used any of those two, but i've seen reviews for the thermaltake big typhoon and it cools really good from what i hear. I just ordered a thermaltake big typhoon 🙂

its relative to the cash you want to put into it. the freezer is 25$...the zalman is 60+ the ninja is 50$ without a fan... the typhoon is 50$

if you poor and dont overclock insanley...freezer is ok... if you rich get that ninja and stick a big ol fan on it.

Ninja is $35 at jab-tech.

oh sweet!

I currently use two scythe hsf's on my systems as well as a freezer 64 and to be honest they all work well with proper case ventillation.

big typhoon = pain in the ass to install, but it's awesome. the fan only spins every once in a while.

I was worried about that. Are any of the others spoken about in this thread easier?

GO WATER!!! 😀 but personally, i would go with a ninja if u have a rear exhaust port, because the way its designed all the hot air can get blown out the rear, but on the TT BT, all the hot air is blown back to your board and theres an annoying PWMIC right next to it, so it tends to heat up the board :X

But thats my two cents.

But ive installed and used the TT BT on my other system and it works great, the ninja does as well, but these things are really massive and heavy.

My choice however would go with the SI-120. Its closer to the board so it causes less torque strain, and the differences between it and the others are about 1-2degree's

does the opteron 170 come with the "good" stock AMD cooler?

only the best for OEM. I believe it uses the heat pipe cooler which shows its about even on par with a XP-90 from thermalrights 😀

Should I throw an Arctic Freezer 64 on there if I plan on a moderate overclock? Just want to keep it cool(er than stock). I actually ended up w/ an A8R32-MVP, Opteron 170, G.Skill DDR 500 memory & X1900XTX video card.

Any thoughts welcome, as I want to order this ASAP so I can get this thing built.

The reason I am leaning towards the Freezer 64 Pro instead of Big Typhoon is the weight and installation of the typhoon. Freezer would be less hassle, but is it any performance gain over the stock heatpipe HSF that came with my opty 170? It is obviously no big typhoon, but would it be enough to get my opteron 170 to ~2.5 or 2.6ghz on air? Case is Gigabyte 3d aurora, if that helps.

EDIT: After further research, it seems the AF 64 Pro doesn't cover the surface of the opteron dual cores properly. In that case, where can I find install instructions for the big typhoon on an s939 motherboard? Actually, how in the heck do I get the stock HSF mounting bracket off my motherboard?
