What's the best convertible out there for about $25,000? The sportier the car the better.

Miata's and Del Sol's are too small. If I could afford $30k, I'd just say screw it and go get a used BMW 3-series but I can't.

Too small? Such a shame. You can't get a sportier convertible for under $25,000. The Miata is pure sports car, without pretension, and priced affordably. The 3-series convertibles have cachet, but they really don't drive GREAT. You can really tell the difference between the 3-series sedans and the convertibles. The latter handle less crisply and seem slower/heavier. Of course, when you chop the top off, you lose rigidity, but some models (Miata) don't seem affected by this.

98 Mercedes SLK with decent miles. Can't go wrong with a retractable hardtop. Don't mess with plastic rear windows and canvas tops.

Another option would be the soon-to-be-released VW Beetle-S (Turbo) Cabrio.

Actually, a used 3-series convertible "is" around $25k. I did a quick check on Edmunds and a '97 328i is right at your price. Although the new body's been around for a while, the e36's still look pretty nice.
