I want a flat screen monitor to use to replace my tv and 21" crt. I don't want to spend over $1500. Suggestions? Higher quality items only - i don't buy generic/low quality stuff unless it's a unique 'diamond in the rough' kind of deal.

Thanks for your input guys!!

You want cheap but huge?

Then you're looking @ TVs basically.

Well isn't Dell's 30" about the cheapest 30" display, & it's over 2K?

I gotcha - i was just looking at it. OMG... there's no way my 7800gt would handle 2560x1600!!!

Maybe the 2407 is the choice lol. They work out all the bugs yet?

What's wrong with getting a 26 or 27" good name LCD TV that has decent inputs. Sony Bravia or similar. You will get 1366 * 768 resolution, so you don't tax your card so much, better PQ for TV than most computer monitors, tuner built in, seems like the way to go to me.

FWIW, I've given up waiting for the larger panels to come down in price to where I feel OK buying a TV, so I'm probably going this route, then just get a 40" panel in a couple years and move the small one to the offce as mostly a monitor.

FW900. It's super cheap compared to lcd's and offers unrivaled performance for games/movies/tv.

If you can handle the size and weight go for it.

You won't be able to find a new one, and thus expect that you might have a headache or two. And factor in that return shipping will cost you a ton of money if there is any problems. Over at Hardocp they talked like most of the good quality ones are probably gone and that you'll have a hard time getting a good one nowadays. That and you'll end up with only about 22" of screen.

Your 7800GT isn't going to handle 1920x1200 that well either. With the 30" you can run 1280x800 and it will still look quite good. You can also run lower resolutions 1:1 if you need to.

People have been able to get the 3007 for about $1500 on a deal, but they're pretty few and far between.

I think someone linked to it already, but there are a couple of 1080p 37" LCDs that you can get for around that price.

The Olevia 37in is $1100 shipped at New Egg.

Has all the inputs DVI/VGA etc.

Pretty good for a cheaper HDTV.

You can find it even a bit cheaper on Pricewatch

Can even use a cheaper/older video card with it as resolution is around 1280x720.

Seriously though..it's not a computer monitor but a TV.
It's made for TV. If you want a huge LCD monitor buy a Dell and shell out
the money for dual drive video card.

I've tried using my 27wide LCDTV as a monitor...
You can..but not quite as sharp and the higher contrast/backlight
is great for TV but gives you big headache from 2 feet away!

LCDTV is terrific and you can even play videos from Yahoo etc.

I use my 19in monitor for reading though..no headache at 2 ft distance!

If your going to be using this as a PC monitor as well you will really want 1080p... IMO.

That's true but forget it for <$1500 and forget huge TV's .
Most TV's are 720p native at best and scale 1080i.
Looks great but it's not a monitor really.

With $1500 you have to ask what you want...
Better/bigger TV or medium size monitor and buy a new video card.
Life is about compromise unless you have big amounts of money.

The Sceptre and Westinghouse have 37" LCD TVs with 1920x1080 resolution (1080p). I got one (the Sceptre) for my ex, and it's awesome. Not sure how to use it as a desktop monitor though... cause you'd need to be quite a ways away from it unless you want to kill your eyes.

imho, the GDM - FW900 is still a viable option. i bought two from a guy off ebay for $350.00. i had to drive 400 miles round trip to pick them up in Miami so my girlfriend and i made a weekend of it. i got back and sold one for the original $350.00 i paid for two so i was out about $60.00 for gas. it's still an awesome monitor. nothing like gaming @ 2048 x 1220 at 85hz.w/16:10 ratio. HL2 Episode 1 runs around 100fps with HDR and 16X AF on my rig. couldn't be happier ;)
