best computer maintenance program -- registry cleaner, etc.?

tami

Lifer
so i'm trying to improve the performance on my laptop, and naturally, i don't want to reformat.

what are the best third-party programs to do the task successfully? i'm looking for a registry cleaner and perhaps something else that may scan my computer to see if any programs (in the program files folder or in system32) have left any remnants after an uninstall.

any other maintenance program recommendations are appreciated -- i'm not sure what else there may be, so please give a description if you have something great. 🙂

regclean? it appears that that program hasn't been updated on any website since january of 1998. is this the same program?

note that i'm willing to pay for a good program, so shareware program recommendations are also helpful 🙂

I've found you can get a real good cleaning by first running

McAfee Quick Clean Lite,

then

a spybot cleaner,

and then

Registry First Aid

and then

scandisk (Chkdisk) & defrag.

Every once in a while I download & run one of the other registry cleaners that kill things Registry First Aid misses.

For defrag, I prefer voptXP, but it's a little expen$ive.

This routine keeps things pretty clean, helps make crashes rare, & aids speed.

My bad...the name is actually RegCleaner.

You think cleaning the registry would improve performance? It won't help performance one bit. The only thing you may get out of using a registry cleaner is problems. It is definitely not recommended to use a regitry cleaner. Especially since you only want to use one thinking it will increase performance.

it's not solely about increasing performance. it's about doing regular maintenance and a registry cleaner is part of that.

I actually got a 3fps increase in doom3 after deleting 100's of invalid registry entries on a friends comp.

System Mechanic 5 is a top notch and you will be a happy camper! It has everything tools to get your lappy at top performance.
But it is not free.
