actually Holi is supposed to represent the colors of life (or something). Used to be that only colored powders were used...the people would sing and dance and throw colors on each other and in the air, etc. But to make it fun for the kids, they started marketing squirt guns and colored dyes that you mix with water. its like a big super soaker party for the kids (and some adults)...and it gives the kids an excuse to get messy and dirty without having to worry about catching a beating from their parents for ruining their clothes
